Arkansas High School Spring Spotlight: Greenwood

By: Prep Baseball Arkansas Staff

The Arkansas high school baseball season kicks off on Feb. 26, opening day for regular season action under AAA regulations. Leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2024 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, counting down through the official Prep Baseball Arkansas Preseason Power 25 Rankings.

Perennially, we’ve submitted a preseason questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.

Our 2024 preseason coverage continues today.

2024 SEASON OUTLOOK

No. of Returning Starters:

5

Top Returning Players:

Grant Karnes, P/OF, 2025, 6-1, 185, R/R
Grant was a 2023 All-State two way player last year. As a pitcher he was 8-0 with a 1.74 ERA. He will also play outfield when he is not pitching. He hit .386 a year ago with an OBP of .480.

Austin Mitchell, P/OF, 2024, 6-0, 195, R/R
Austin was our closer last year and moves in to the starter role. Last year he threw a complete game victory against 6A runner up Bentonville, fanning 8. He is one of the top defensive centerfielders in the State.

Top Newcomers:

Ty Holt, C, 2027, 5-9, 165, R/R
Ty is very advanced for a freshman. He is a high IQ player and understands the game like an upper classman. He is a plus defender and we also look for him to hold his own this year at the plate.

Aaron Taylor, P, 2027, 5-9, 170, L/L
Aaron will provide us some depth on the mound this year. He has the mound presence of a senior and has really good stuff from the left side. FB will work 75-78 with a plus CB. The main thing for him is he knows how to pitch to spots and get outs.

Coach’s Insight:

“Pitching will be the strength of the Bulldogs this year. We will have two of the top 5 arms in the conference as our starters this year. We have some depth as well on the mound with 5 total arms logging varsity innings a year ago. Infield play will be a question mark heading into the season. We graduated 3 of our infielders from a year ago and are working through the process of finding the right combination to replace the three from last year.” – Brandon Brewer, head coach
