Preseason All-State: Pitcher Analysis

The Preseason All-State brings a collection of the top 2018 prospects from across the state, previewing what to expect this spring from some of the more impactful juniors. Earlier this week we kicked off our post event analysis with the top catching prospects.

Today we take a look at the top pitching prospects. The event was loaded with high-end arms with a number of deserving prospects not making the cut. Many of the players who did not make the top 10 will play an important role on varsity teams all over the state this spring.

Top Left-handed Pitching Prospects

1. Caden Monke, LHP/OF, Mount Olive, 2018
Arkansas commit. 6-foot-3, 160-pound, long, lean and highly projectable two-way prospect with plenty of room for continued physical development. On the mound, left-handed pitcher with an extremely high ceiling. Arm is long, loose and quick out of a high ¾ slot; highly athletic arm action, projects for continued velocity gains down the road. Smooth, fluid delivery, stays on-line, lands square and finishes athletically. Fastball has late life, jumps out of his hand, life through the hitting zone and sat 88-90 mph, touched 91. Curveball, sharp spin, 1/7 shape, occasional late action, 71-73 mph. Changeup, maintains fastball arm speed, sinking action at times, 79-81 mph. Showed off his athleticism running a 6.82 laser-timed 60. Offensively, left-handed hitter, open setup, leg-lift timing trigger and incorporates lower half in swing. Loose hands, bat speed, long, uphill path, looks to lift the baseball; 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, big arm from the outfield; clocked at 91 mph. Fluid, easy outfield actions, plays through the baseball and soft hands. High ceiling left-handed pitcher in the 2018 class.

2. Danny Zimmerman, LHP, Lincoln-Way East, 2018
Committed to Louisville just following the event. Added about 25 pounds since the Future Games last August and made a significant velocity jump establishing himself as one of the premier left-handers in the Midwest. 6-foot, 170-pound left-handed pitcher with strength in the lower half. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Smooth delivery with a square landing. Generates effortless arm speed. Fastball sat 89-91 topping out at 92 mph thrown down in the zone for strikes. Also featured a two seamer with running action. Slows arm on slider with 2-8 shape at 74-77 mph. Changeup has sinking action at 76-78 mph. Will receive lots of draft interest in the coming summer.

3. Nathan Lavender, LHP, El Paso, 2018
Illinois commit. 6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed pitcher with a strong frame. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a loose, quick arm action. Tall and fall slow paced delivery. Works in line with home plate with an open toed landing. Fastball has late action in the zone at 87-89 topping out at 90 mph thrown with conviction. Curveball has 1-7 shape with depth at 69-70 mph for strikes. Changeup is mostly straight with occasional fading action at 77-78 mph, thrown with fastball arm speed. One of the top left-handers in the state.

4. Steven Sanchez, LHP, Mundelein, 2018
Arkansas commit. 6-foot-7, 240-pound left-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing. Fastball sat 85-86 topping out at 87 mph with downhill angle. Curveball has 1-7 shape with depth at 70-72 mph with occasional sharp action. Changeup has sinking action at 71-76 mph.

5. Kyle Salley, LHP, Homewood-Flossmoor, 2018
5-foot-9, 156-pound left-handed pitcher, added more strength to his frame over the winter. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, loose, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a square landing and some effort. Good balance with athleticism in delivery. Fastball flashed slight running action at 86-88 mph. Slows arm some on off speed pitches. Curveball has 1-7 shape at 68-72 mph. Changeup has fading action at 69-71 mph for strikes.

6. Sean Sinisko, LHP, Geneva, 2018
Illinois State commit. 6-foot-5, 230-pound left-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a low ¾ arm angle with a loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball has running action at 84-86 mph for strikes. Curveball has tight sweeping action at 70-74 mph for strikes. Slows on changeup that has sinking action at 70-73 mph for strikes.

7. James Kulak, LHP, Neuqua Valley, 2018
6-foot-1, 168-pound left-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action and wrap on the backside. Drop and drive delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball sat 84-86 topping out at 87 mph worked up in the zone. Curveball has 2-8 shape with short breaking action at 74-76 mph. Showed feel for his changeup while maintaining fastball arm speed with running action at 77-79 mph.

8. Tyler Horvath, LHP, Romeoville, 2018
6-foot, 190-pound left-handed pitcher with a strong frame. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Drop and drive delivery working in line with home plate. Smooth rhythm with a square landing. Repeats mechanics well with good balance throughout. Fastball has running action down in the zone for strikes at 83-84 topping out at 85 mph. Curveball was erratic with 1-7 shape at 68-69 mph. Changeup showed swing and miss potential with sinking action at 70-71 mph for strikes.  

9. Stephen Sewruk, LHP, Yorkville, 2018
6-foot-2, 160-pound left-handed pitcher with an athletic frame. Works from a low ¾ arm angle with a loose arm action with a stab on the backside. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing. Fastball has running action at 81-83 topping out at 84 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape at 69-70 mph. Slider has more sweeping action at 70-71 mph. Changeup is straight at 74-75 mph for strikes.

10. Keegan Bates, LHP, Plainfield North, 2018
6-foot, 165-pound left-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Drop and drive delivery working in line with home plate. Smooth delivery with a square landing and regular effort. Showed feel for three pitches for strikes. Fastball has slight running action at 81-84 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape, flashing occasional depth at 70-73 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup at 76-78 mph with running action.

TOP Right-handed pitching PROSPECTS

1. Ryan Vice, RHP, Lincoln-Way Central, 2018
6-foot-4, 210-pound right-handed pitcher with a strong, wide shouldered frame. One of the top uncommitted arms in Illinois. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Works exclusively out of the stretch. Tall and fall delivery with a high leg kick. Works in line with home plate, square landing with good tempo and easy effort. Fastball sat 88-90 topping out at 93 mph on his last pitch with late life. Slider has 11-5 shape with gradual action at 69-72 mph for strikes. Changeup is straight at 79-82 mph for strikes.

2. Hayden Juenger, RHP/INF, O’Fallon, 2018
6-foot, 180-pound two-way player, athletic frame, live loose body. On the mound delivery is athletic and repeats, squared landing athletic finish, compact and under control. Arm action is easy and quick, ¾ slot, loose projectable arm. Fastball is on level plane with hard arm side run, sat 86-88 mph, touched 89 mph. Curveball plays on 11/5 plane, gradual action with slight arm deceleration, showed feel for the strike zone, ranged 63-68 mph. Changeup is 74-77 mph, arm side action, showed feel for strikes. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, open setup, leg lift trigger. Loose hands, gap to gap contact, athletic hitter. 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively moved well, above average defender, plays through the baseball and showed actions and body control. 83 mph arm across the diamond, loose ¾ slot, arm side run. 7.43 runner in the 60.

3. Riley Gowens, RHP, Libertyville, 2018
6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed pitcher with a solid, athletic frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a loose, whippy arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a short stride working in line with home plate. Upright finish, arm does most of the work. Fastball showed running and sinking action, heavy at times at 86-87 mph. Slider has 10-4 shape with tight rotation and sharp breaking action at 76-78 mph. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed at 79-81 mph with sinking action down in the zone for strikes.

4. Jeffery Massey, RHP, Gwendolyn Brooks, 2018
6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed pitcher with a thin, lanky, projectable frame. Works from an over the top arm angle with a loose, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a high leg kick. Works in line with home plate, smooth rhythm with an athletic finish. Three pitch feel for strikes. Fastball has slight running action at 84-85 topping out at 86 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with sharp breaking action at 68-69 mph. Maintains fastball arm speed on changeup with fading action at 73-75 mph. One of the most projectable arms in the Illinois 2018 class.

5. Jacob Newman, RHP/INF, Glenbrook South, 2018
6-foot-3, 193-pound, two-way prospect with a strong, durable frame and solid lower half. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, made a jump in velocity and stuff since the last time we had seen him; fastball sat 84-86 mph, touched 88. Works primarily from the stretch, stays on-line, lands closed, and some effort throughout. Arm has some length on the backside, loose and whippy out front from a ¾ slot. Fastball, heavy action at times, gets sink when down in the zone. Curveball, flashed tight spin, sharp 11/5 action, inconsistent in the zone, 70-73 mph. Changeup, maintains fastball arm speed, arm-side-run, sink at times, 79-82 mph. High follow 2018 right-handed pitcher. Offensively, right-handed hitter, with some looseness and strength through contact. 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Balanced setup, loads on his backside, short stride. Aggressive swinger, uphill path and gap-to-gap approach. Defensively, arm action similar to on the mound, loose and quick, throws carry across the diamond and clocked at 82 mph. 7.70 runner in the 60.

6. Jaylen Patterson,RHP/OF, Kenwood, 2018
6-foot-2, 180-pound, athletically built, well-proportioned two-way prospect. Highly projectable right-handed pitcher. Arm is extremely quick and loose out of a high ¾ window. Delivery works with smooth rhythm, repeats, stays on-line, lands square, finishes athletically and regular effort throughout. Fastball works downhill, thrown for strikes at the bottom of the zone and sat 84-85 mph, touched 86. Slider, works 11/5, short break, occasionally between curveball/slider type action, 71-74 mph. Changeup, sat 69-71 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, open, tall setup, stride gets back to even and average balance through contact. Fluid rhythm, loose hands, flashed quick twitch and bat speed. Short to the ball, extension through contact and a gap-to-gap approach. Defensively, feet work fluidly in the outfield, plays through the baseball and throws flashed carry, clocked at 84 mph. 7.09 runner in the 60, laser-timed.

7. Francois Castillo, 3B/RHP, Clemente, 2018
Eastern Illinois commit. 6-foot, 210-pound, solid lower half, 3B/RHP. Defensively, long arm action, throws showed carry across the infield at 93 mph. Max effort with a long exchange and release. Offensively, right-handed hitter, toe tap stride with a long, uphill swing path, pull approach. Exit velocity clocked at 89 mph. Also, ran a 7.12 laser-timed 60. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with an upright finish and maximum effort. Fastball sat 87-89 mph. Slider sat 73-77 mph. Changeup has cut action at 69-71 mph.

8. Ryan Howe, SS/RHP, Prospect, 2018
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting SS/RHP. Highly athletic, ran the 60 at 6.75. Offensively hits from a balanced setup with a short leg lift trigger and good balance. Pull hitter with a long, uphill swing path. Showed strength thru contact with 90 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively has a loose arm action from a ¾ slot. Throws showed carry across the infield at 88 mph. Plays thru the ball with soft hands and solid defensive actions. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a loose, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Closed landing with smooth rhythm. Fastball has running action at 83-86 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with gradual action at 68-71 mph. Changuep has arm side running action at 75-78 mph for strikes.  

9. Colin Fields, RHP, Libertyville, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, loose, quick arm action. Tall to balance point, drop and drive working in line with home plate. Square landing with an athletic finish and smooth rhythm. Maintains good balance throughout delivery. Fastball has slight running action at 84-85 topping out at 87 mph for strikes. Curveball has 12-6 shape with depth,  thrown soft at 65-67 mph. Slider has more lateral action than curveball at 68-70 mph. Throws changeup down in zone at 71-75 mph with fading action.

10. Andrew Hoffman, RHP/1B, Plainfield East, 2018
Projectable frame, long levers, 6-foot-3, 170-pounds, projects as a right-handed pitcher. Delivery is slightly rotational, tall and fall with higher front side, regular effort. Arm action is long, high ¾ slot. Fastball touched 87 mph, sat 83-85 mph, occasional sink to arm side. Curveball has 11/5 shape, showed consistent ability to drop for strikes, 69-71 mph. Straight changeup thrown with arm speed, 75-77 mph, some feel. RIght-handed hitter, tall setup with open stance. Long arms worked loosely, uphill path, slight pull side tendency. 83 mph exit velocity from the tee. Arm played at 82 across the diamond, serviceable actions around the bag. 7.72 runner in the 60.

Logan Boente, RHP, O’Fallon, 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed pitcher with a lanky, athletic frame. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing and upright finish. Fastball sat 79-82 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape at 69-71 mph. Showed feel for his changeup at 73-75 mph for strikes.

Joe Bullard, LHP, New Trier, 2018
6-foot-1, 145-pound left-handed pitcher with a thin, lanky frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a square landing and regular effort. Fastball flashed occasional cutting action at 79-81 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape with erratic command at 64-67 mph. Changeup has sinking action at 72-74 mph.

Sammy Butera, RHP, Niles West, 2018
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a hip turn at balance point. Square landing with some rhythm. Slide step from the stretch. Fastball sat 84-85 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with short breaking action at 73-76 mph, had better feel of it from the stretch. Changeup was straight and blended with fastball at 81-83 mph.

Ricky Castro, RHP, Neuqua Valley, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed pitcher with an athletic frame. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, stiff arm action. Drop and drive delivery working in line with home plate. Worked up with his fastball at 80-82 topping out at 83mph. Curveball has 12-6 shape at 71-74 mph. Changeup has sinking action at 70—72 mph.

Ben Cornelius, LHP, Lake Zurich, 2018
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a short, loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing. Showed feel for three pitches for strikes in bullpen. Fastball was straight at 81-82 topping out at 83 mph. Curveball has 2-8 shape with depth and sharp breaking action at 67-69 mph. Good feel for his changeup at 75-77 mph.

Nate Dirkes, RHP, Wheeling, 2018
6-foot-5, 215-pound right-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Works exclusively out of the stretch. Drop and drive delivery working in line with home plate. Struggled with command in bullpen session. Fastball has running action at 83-85 mph. Curveball sat 72-73 mph. Changeup blended with fastball at 79-83 mph.

Gavin Doyle, RHP, Plainfield North, 2018
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Works from an over the top arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a short stride, works in line with home plate. Square landing with smooth rhythm and an athletic finish. Good balance throughout delivery. Showed feel for three pitches for strikes in bullpen. Fastball sat 83-84 mph. Curveball has 12-6 shape with depth at 70-72 mph. Changeup has occasional sinking action at 77-78 mph.

Keegan Garcelon, RHP, Huntley, 2018
6-foot-4, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from an over the top arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Some rhythm with a square landing. Fastball sat 82-83 mph down in the zone for strikes. Curveball has 11-5 shape with short breaking action at 66-68 mph. Changeup sat 68-72 mph. 

AJ Golembiewski, RHP, Marian Central, 2018
6-foot-4, 175-pound right-handed pitcher with a lanky frame. Works from a ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a square landing and upright finish. Showed a three pitch feel for strikes. Fastball has slight running action at 82-84 mph. Slider has 11-5 shape with gradual action at 69-71 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup that has fading action at 74-75 mph.

Nate Gomez, RHP, South Elgin, 2018
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed pitcher with a strong, athletic frame. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action, deep draw on the backside. Drop and drive delivery with a square landing, upper half works across body. Fastball sat 85-86 topping out at 88 mph. Working on feel for offspeed. Curveball has 11-5 shape with loose rotation at 68-71 mph. Changeup sat 75-77 mph.

Ian Grubich, RHP, McHenry, 2018
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ to over the top arm angle with a long arm action. Full over head delivery with smooth rhythm working in line with home plate. Three pitch feel for strikes. Fastball has slight sinking action at 80-83 topping out at 85 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with depth at 70-72 mph. Maintains fastball arm speed on changeup at 76-77 mph with fading action.

Steven Hamer, OF/LHP, St. Charles North, 2018
5-foot-10, 155-pound, two-way prospect. On the mound, left-handed pitcher, three-pitch feel and easy effort. Arm works short, loose and clean from a ¾ slot. Smooth delivery, stays on-line and lands square. Fastball, flashed life, arm-side-run and sat 83-84 mph. Changeup looks to be his best secondary offering; feel, sink, fade action and sat 76-79 mph. Curveball, short break, 71-75 mph. Offensively, left-handed hitter, tall, open setup, smooth load, drops his hands, toe-tap stride and good balance throughout. Repeatable, simple swing, short, level bat path, line-drive approach with the ability to backspin the baseball and uses the whole field. 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, fluid footwork, plays through the baseball with steady hands. Over-the-top arm action, accurate throws with carry clocked at 86 mph. 7.01 runner in the 60.

Bryce Hellgeth, C/RHP, Saint Viator, 2018
6-foot-2, 200-pound two-way player, solid frame, strong lower half. On the mound works directionally down the hill, regular effort, some rhythm. Short over the top arm strength. Fastball sat 85-86 mph, touched 87 mph, showed feel for the bottom of the zone. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 68-72 mph, slight deceleration. Changeup is 70-75 mph. Defensively showed arm strength, 79 mph out of the crouch, 81 mph across the diamond. Arm works with length out of the crouch, some carry, high ¾ slot. 2.04-2.12 pop times. Offensively hits from a balanced stance, leg kick trigger, simple setup. Flashed hard contact, 94 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.08 runner in the 60.

Dylan Honkala, RHP, McHenry, 2018
6-foot-1, 200-pound right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery with an upright finish and some effort. Throws a two seam and four seam fastball. Maxes out on four seamer and lacks command, more under control with two seamer at 81-83 mph. Curveball has 10-4 shape with sharp breaking action at 73-75 mph.

William Jackson, RHP, Loyola, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action and wrap on the backside. Drop and drive delivery with a high front side and some effort. Works in line with home plate. Fastball has slight running action at 80-81 topping out at 82 mph. Curveball has 12-6 shape with occasional depth at 64-66 mph. Changeup has running action at 72-75 mph. Threw all three pitches for strikes.

Pierce Jones, RHP, East Richland, 2018
6-foot-4, 153-pound right-handed pitcher with a thin, lanky frame. Works from an over the top arm angle with a long, loose arm action and deep stab on the backside. Drop and drive delivery with a high front side. Square landing working in line with home plate. Fastball sat 82-83 topping out at 85 mph. Curveball has 12-6 shape with gradual action at 65-68 mph, dropped in for strikes. Changeup sat 78-80 mph. Slider has short breaking action at 69-72 mph.

Jonathan Keller, RHP, Hoffman Estates, 2018
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed pitcher with a lanky frame. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Drop and drive, slow paced delivery with a closed landing. Fastball was straight at 81-83 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape with some depth at 66-67 mph for strikes. Changeup was straight at 75-77 mph for strikes.

Nicholas Laxner, RHP, Huntley, 2018
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed pitcher with a lanky frame. On the mound works from both a ¾ arm angle as well as submarine. Tall and fall delivery with easy effort working in line with home plate. Fastball sat 81-82 topping out at 83 mph from a conventional slot, sat 77-78 from a submarine slot. Throws both a curveball and a slider. Curveball comes from a conventional slot working 67-70 mph. Slider comes from submarine angle at 68 mph. Changeup has sinking action at 69-71 mph.

Ryan Louck, LHP, Plainfield East, 2018
6-foot, 165-pound left-handed pitcher. Works from a ¾ arm angle with a loose arm action. Side rocker, overhead delivery with a closed landing creating crossfire action. Fastball has slight running action at 77-80 topping out at 81 mph for strikes. Curveball has 1-7 shape with sharp breaking action at 68-70 mph for strikes. Changeup has slight sinking action at 69-71 mph for strikes.

Giuseppe Mattera, OF/LHP, Pleasant Plains, 2018
6-foot, 156-pound, lean, wiry two-way prospect. On the mound, left-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, stays on-line, lands slightly closed. Arm works long and out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 81-83 mph, touched 84. Curveball, thrown near fastball arm speed, 1/7 shape, 66-70 mph. Changeup, 74-78 mph. Offensively, left-handed hitter, tall, open setup, hip-turn, coiled load and short leg-lift timing trigger. Pull approach and maintains balance through contact. 84 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, showed off a big arm that carries at 90 mph from the outfield.  Fluid feet, plays with bounce, plays through the baseball, athletic crow hop and clean exchange. Long arm action and out of a high ¾ slot.

Ian McMahon, LHP, Benton, 2018
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Some effort in delivery with a square landing. Fastball has slight cutting action at 78-79 mph down in the zone for strikes. Curveball was soft at 68-70 mph with 2-8 shape. Changeup has cutting action at 70-71 mph.

William McManaman, LHP, St. Ignatius, 2018
6-foot-4, 200-pound left-handed pitcher. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Works exclusively out of the stretch. Tal and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Good balance with a square landing. Fastball sat 78-81 topping out at 82 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape at 65-68 mph. Changeup has sinking action at 71-73 mph for strikes.

Brady Miller, RHP, Plainfield North, 2018
6-foot-4, 185-pound right-handed pitcher with an athletic frame. Works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing. Fastball has slight running action at 82-84 mph. Showed feel for his curveball with 12-6 shape at 73-75 mph thrown with fastball arm speed for strikes. Changeup has running action at 76-77 mph.

Myles Norman, RHP/OF, Morgan Park, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound, lean, athletically built, two-way prospect. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, raw arm strength. Delivery work with some rhythm, tucked front side at balance point, works across his body and lands closed with effort throughout. Loose, quick arm action. Fastball sat 83-87 mph. Slider, backed up at times, 73-77 mph. Changeup sat 72-74 mph. Offensively, right-handed hitter, relaxed, open setup, pre-pitch load and leg-kick timing trigger.
