2021 Junior State Games: Quick Hits

The 2021 Junior State Games took place Saturday, October 16th and Sunday, October 17th at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona, FL. The event featured players from the 2023 class representing their region of North, South, East, and West Florida participating in a pro-style workout followed by 3 total games per region in front of the PBR Florida Scouting Staff.

The weekend was full of talent from all 4 regions, but the East finished at the top going 3-0 throughout the event. Today, we will break down some of the standouts from this weekend’s action in a Quick Hits article. Take a look at the biggest standouts from each region.

North

Shawn Andrade SS / 2B / St. Johns Country Day, FL / 2023

The 2021 Future Gamer continued to show his above average defensive tools, and even showed a stronger arm this week up to 87 mph. Andrade moves well at short and shows range to both sides making tough plays look easy. Really like the way he plays the game with energy and will be an impact college player when he gets to USF. 

 

Zack DeJesus OF / 1B / Pensacola Catholic, FL / 2023

DeJesus swung the bat well over the weekend barreling balls in BP as well as getting multiple hits in game. Athletic frame at 6-foot, 190. Ran a 6.96 and had a max exit velo of 96 mph. Uncommitted. 

 

Nicholas Lorenz RHP / OF / Spruce Creek, FL / 2023

Lorenz impressed in his start against the South. 6-foot, 165 pound frame. Arm is loose and athletic to the plate. Lorenz got the start against the South and went 4 shutout innings. He struck out 6 and allowed 0 hits. Uncommitted. 

 

Isaiah Mamea RHP / OF / St. Johns Country Day , FL / 2023

2021 Future Gamer continues to make jumps on the mound. Long, athletic frame at 6-foot-3, 180. Fastball was up to 90 and showed the ability to spin two separate breaking balls. Gets down the hill to extension as the fastball gets onto hitters quickly. 5 strikeouts in 4 innings of work against the East. USF commit. 

Jacob Thomas LHP / 1B / St. Johns Country Day, FL / 2023

Thomas is an interesting left-handed arm. Loose to the plate with cutting action on his fastball. Up to 84 and is able to create soft contact off the fastball. Slider is an above average pitch that he can throw for strikes in any count. Struck out 6 in 4 innings against the West. 

 

 

South

Kristoffer Blanks 1B / LHP / Dwyer, FL / 2023

Blanks had a good showing at the Junior State Games. Athletic 5-foot-11, 180 pound two-way. Batted .600 over the weekend with a double, 2 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Also pitched 2 shutout innings and struck out 5 batters. Fastball up to 84 mph from the left side. Uncommitted. 

 

Augusto Calienes RHP / OF / Pembroke Pines Charter, FL / 2023

5-foot-9, 170 pounds. Calienes got the start vs the West on Saturday and looked sharp. After a shaky first, he settled in to go 4 innings allowing just 1 run with 5 strikeouts. Fastball up to 86 mph. Uncommitted. 

 

Michael Farina RHP / 3B / Gulf Coast, FL / 2023

Farina plays with a lot of energy and is a talented two-way player. Showed well on the mound this weekend in 2 separate appearances for the South. Pitched 2.1 innings allowing no runs with 4 strikeouts. Fastball up to 85 mph and showed feel for a swing and miss breaking ball. Also ran a 6.93 and was 87 across the infield. Uncommitted. 

 

Andrew Ildefonso RHP / 1B / Archbishop McCarthy, FL / 2023

Ildefonso started game one for the South and was extremely efficient. Threw 4 shutout innings on only 35 pitches. Allowed no hits and no runs in those 4 innings. Physical 6-foot-2, 205 pound frame. Consistently threw first pitch strikes and got ahead in counts. Fastball up to 87 with a lot to like in the projectable frame. Uncommitted. 

 

Dillon Moquin OF / RHP / Stoneman Douglas, FL / 2023

2021 Future Gamer continues to be an all around talented player. 6.84 60. 90 mph from the outfield. 96 mph max exit velo. Moquin is a gap to gap hitter who does damage to the baseball. Continues to perform at a high level at events. App State commit. 

 

 

East

Adekide Adetuyi LHP / 1B / Merritt Island, FL / 2023

FAU commit pitched in relief for the East in game 1 vs the West. Not overpowering but very effective from the left side up to 83 mph with armside sink. Works the changeup and curveball off the fastball to create swings and misses. 5 strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. 

 

Logan Chapman 3B / SS / Lake Brantley, FL / 2023

Stetson commit. Chapman put together a strong weekend on both sides of the ball. Defends well at both short and third with an above average arm. Offensively, hands work easy to the baseball with a level path and flashed ability to launch to pull side gap. Recorded 2 hits and 2 RBI throughout gameplay. 

 

Chance Fitzgerald RHP / Lake Howell, FL / 2023

Florida State commit. 6-foot-2, 185 pounds. Got the start vs the North Region. Fitzgerald works up tempo and attacks with a quality 3-pitch mix. 3/4 arm slot with a fastball that gets onto hitters quick and generates swings and misses. 4 strikeouts in 2 shutout innings.

Logan Hughes 1B / OF / Winter Springs, FL / 2023

Stetson commit. Hughes was on the barrel all weekend long with 5 total hits. Offensively, works the pull side gap consistently with a max exit velo of 98 mph. Body stays timed up with rhythm and easy barrel control. Batted .556 with 2 doubles, a triple, 4 RBI, and 4 runs scored. 

 

Derek Lopez C / RHP / Olympia, FL / 2023

Lopez showed his athleticism as a two way. Showed above average bat speed with hard line drive approach and will flash some pop at 97 mph exit velo. Impressive 6.59 runner with a 1.90 pop behind the plate and a quick release. Batted .333 with a double. On the mound was up to 85 mph in a scoreless relief appearance. 

 

Collin Priest 1B / Mount Dora Christian Academy, FL / 2023

VCU commit. Strong 6-foot-3, 215 pound frame. Showed potential for above average power in BP with an exit velo of 101 mph. Consistent loud and hard hit balls into the gaps. Launched a double in game as well. 

 

Jake Richardson OF / Melbourne, FL / 2023

Richardson was perhaps the biggest winner of the weekend. Athletic frame, ran a 6.60 and was up to 87 mph from outfield in the morning workouts. In BP, worked a line drive approach back up the middle. In gameplay, batted .333 with 2 triples, 5 RBI, and 2 runs scored. A must follow uncommitted 2023. 

 

P. Alex Sosa C / 3B / Viera, FL / 2023

NC State commit. Showed an easy/repeatable swing with present power to pull side. Ability to keep hands inside the ball and get to the inside pitch at 97 mph exit velo. Behind the plate showed soft hands with a clean transfer and throws on line to the bag at 1.89 pop. 2 hits including a double and 2 RBI during gameplay. 

 

Conner Spelman C / OF / Lake Howell , FL / 2023

Long frame at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds. Swung the bat well during bp and gameplay showing power potential to the pull side. Footwork has improved behind the plate as he produced a 1.91 pop time. 2 hits in game including a double and 2 RBI. Uncommitted. 

 

Joey Wimpelberg RHP / SS / Winter Springs, FL / 2023

UCF commit started game 1 for the East against the West. Lean, athletic frame at 6-foot, 165 pounds. Went 3.1 innings allowing 2 runs with 4 strikeouts. Fastball up to 88 mph and was able to generate soft contact all game. 

 

 

West

Tad Brooks 3B / RHP / Calvary Christian , FL / 2023

Strong frame that he uses well to drive the ball. Keeps hands back well and uses an uphill plane to launch the baseball. Good extension on finish. Led the event with a max exit velo of 101 mph. Uncommitted. 

 

Keeton Burroughs SS / 2B / Calvary Christian, FL / 2023

Simple line drive approach at the plate. Works back up the middle with a level bat path. Consistently on the barrel all weekend long batting .375 throughout the event. Defensively, moves athletically in the infield with a quality first step. Soft hands with range to both sides of his body. Uncommitted. 

 

Cooper Consiglio LHP / IMG Academy, FL / 2023

NC State commit. 6-foot, 175 pounds. Consiglio racked up the strikeouts in his start on Sunday using a 4 pitch mix. Repeatable mechanics/mature feel all around. Would go 3 innings allowing zero hits with 8 strikeouts.

Hunter Dietz LHP / 1B / Calvary Christian, FL / 2023

USF commit. 6-foot-6, 240 pound frame. Really impressed with the jump Dietz has made. Body has gotten leaner & stronger. Up tempo & loose to the plate as he gets to extension with ease. Definitely a riser in the 2023 class. Allowed 1 hit with 4 strikeouts in 3 innings of work.

Andrew Duncan OF / RHP / A3 Academy, FL / 2023

FSU commit. Duncan showed his elite athleticism throughout the weekend. 6.22 60 time. Plus arm up to 94 mph from the outfield. Showed electric bat speed in BP. Consistent hard contact gap to gap with a top exit velo of 97 mph. Batted .444 in game with a double, RBI, and multiple stolen bases. 

 

Daniel Irizarry OF / RHP / Lake Mary, FL / 2023

Really impressed with this Irizarry this weekend. Loose quick hands at the plate. Uses his long frame to create leverage in the swing and drive gap to gap. Lean athletic outfielder showed easy defensive actions in the outfield. Comes through athletically with a quick arm up to 88 mph. Uncommitted. 

 

Landen Maroudis SS / RHP / Calvary Christian, FL / 2023

NC State commit. Long, athletic frame. Maroudis impressed all weekend long in all facets of the game. 6.73 runner, 94 from the outfield, 93 from the outfield. Quick hands with easy range at short. Lots of loud line drive contact offensively. Quick loose hands with the ability to launch when needed. Batted .571 in game with 2 doubles. 7 strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched as well with his fastball up to 93 mph. 

 

Jacob McKenzie C / 3B / Winter Springs, FL / 2023

2021 Future Gamer continues to show well behind the plate with a 1.93 pop time. McKenzie uses his strong lower half well to drive the ball gap to gap with intent. Lets the ball travel, spraying line drives to all fields. In game, found multiple barrels throughout the weekend. Uncommitted. 

 

Blake Opie OF / RHP / Calvary Christian, FL / 2023

USF commit. Physical hitter shows a gap to gap approach with a loud contact. Balanced at the plate. Lets the ball travel and shows ability to launch on contact. Batted .400 throughout the weekend with 2 RBI and a long double to the warning track. Showed range in the outfield making a tough diving catch in right field. 

 

Jacob Riegel SS / 2B / Palm Harbor University, FL / 2023

USF commit. Lean, athletic frame. Simple and under control at the plate. Stays on time with quick hands. Hard line drive contact. Multiple hits in game including a triple and a RBI. 2 shutout innings in relief with his fastball up to 86 mph. 

 

Ryan Rushing LHP / IMG Academy, FL / 2023

5-foot-9, 170 pounds. Rushing came in relief in Game 2 for the West. He commanded the fastball in the zone with 2 swing and miss breaking balls. 2021 Future Gamer registered 6 strikeouts over 2 innings pitched.
