Prep Baseball Texas Staff

The 2024 Texas high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week and updating the Power 30 rankings.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Lake Travis Cavaliers return a talented squad for 2024 after finishing as 6A Regional Quarterfinalists last season. Led by Coach Ryan Rogers, the Cavaliers will be built on their pitching and defense heading into the spring after returning four players who earned First Team All-District in 2023.

Most notably on the defensive side of the ball, the Cavaliers bring back Paris JC signee C/INF Gavyn Schlotterback (2024), who was the District’s Defensive Most Valuable Player a season ago. Joining Schlotterback on the infield will be First Team All-District INF Maddox Medrano (2024), who is committed to Galveston College. Also returning on the infield for the Cavaliers is Wayland Baptist signee 1B Karson Rader (2024), and junior INF/RHP Cole Rhame who recently committed to Richmond University. Elsewhere on the diamond the Cavaliers return Virginia Wesleyan signee and First Team All-District UTL Joey Leoni (2024), and are also expected to bring in sophomore OF Austin Glasgow to join the varsity squad in 2024.

On the mound, the Cavaliers appear to be loaded, bringing back two upperclassmen arms, as well as bringing in an additional two underclassmen arms. Their ace from a season ago is back in senior RHP Kadyn Leon (uncommitted). Leon was First Team All-District last season and is currently ranked No. 79 in the state, making him one of the state’s top remaining uncommitted arms. Last spring, we saw Leon working his fastball routinely in the low-90’s (T93 mph) and are looking forward to seeing how he’s progressed since then coming into the spring. Joining Leon atop the pitching staff will be senior LHP Wyatt Gatlin, who is currently ranked No. 207 in the state and is committed to Texas. Two sophomore arms will look to make big impacts in 2024 in RHP Cooper Webb and RHP/UTL CJ Hansford. Webb has an impressive frame for his age standing at 6-foot-3, 170-pounds with room to fill out when we last saw him. He was throwing in the low-80’s in our last look at him (January 2023), and we could see a jump in his velo in 2024. Webb is currently ranked No. 54 in the state for his class. Another underclassmen arm to monitor going into 2024 is freshman RHP Westin McDaniel, who could join the previously mentioned sophomore duo in the coming years as building blocks on the pitching staff.

With their pitching depth and reliable pieces on defense, the Cavaliers should have a good shot at making a deep run again come 6A postseason time in 2024.
