2024 Spring Team Preview: St. John's Prep (MA)
DANVERS, Ma. - While the last state title came in 2000, the aspiration remains the same for St. John’s Prep and mentor Dan Letarte, who has been with the program for 30 years, including 11 as head coach.
“The program goal is to compete for a state championship every season,” noted Letarte, who has a 154-48 record in his time in charge of the baseball program at the all-boys college prep school.
The St. John’s Prep mentor points to four returns as leaders of this year’s squad and, fortunately, it means strength up the middle for the 2024 edition of the Eagles.
Aidan Driscoll, the sixth-rated senior catcher in New England, brings talent behind the plate along with a left-handed hitting stick. The Maryland commit is coming off a .300 season a year ago.
Will Shaheen brings more talent up the middle for the Eagles. The 10th-ranked 2025 shortstop in New England, is back following an impressive 2023 campaign that included a .388 batting average with one home run and 17 RBIs. The uncommitted junior also did not allow an earned run pitching in relief.
Brown commit Cam LaGrassa is the top returning hitter from a 13-9 squad that lost in the second round of the tournament a year ago. The 15th-rated senior shortstop in New England, who also had one homer and drove in 17 runs while producing a .459 average, will play third base and short.
Another key returnee is Nic Lembo, a junior center fielder who had 10 extra-base hits and 18 stolen bases while batting .379 last season. Lembo is the 13th-rated 2025 outfielder in New England.
“I like this team’s overall energy and accountability,” explained Letarte. “The strengths this year should be defense and pitching. The keys to success will be hitting and scoring runs.”
One newcomer to watch according to Letarte is junior left-handed pitcher Nathan Hall, who brings promise to the mound against a challenging schedule.
“The Catholic Conference is a very competitive league and competing every day is important,” Letarte said.
