TN HS Team Preview: Knoxville Catholic Fighting Irish

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Knoxville Catholic comes into the 2024 spring season off a remarkable 2023 campaign that saw the Irish finish with an overall record of 31-9 and TSSAA DII AA state championship. The game was a thriller with 2023 grad Ian Hubbard getting a walk-off single to beat CPA in the bottom of the 7th 4-3. The Irish lost some talent with fellow seniors graduating and do it all Daniel Parris now playing at Tennessee. The club does however return some talent with 4 positional starters slated to mark their return with depth on the mound as 5 pitchers with adequate varsity experience returning. Senior SS/RHP and Virginia Tech Signee Hudson Lutterman will be this year's club de facto team captain and will be a big factor in how far they can go this season. Senior outfielder and Johnson University signee Grant Tallent put up solid numbers in the back-half of the lineup order and should move up to the top half this season. Junior LHP and center fielder Cooper Williamson comes in with extreme athleticism and competitive spirit. He was a sophomore starter last season and will play a major role in the lineup and on the mound. The Irish will look to give him the ball in every district series where he comes in mid 80’s from the left side and feel for spin. Senior 3B/C Mason Fields missed a big chuck of last year with an injury but played well in his return as the DH. He should hold down a position full time this spring, while being a middle of the order bat. Senior RHP and Johnson University signee Jack Judd will presume a role as a district starter and can eat up a lot of innings. Juniper infielder Alex Ditmore is a fundamentally sound player with an exceptional work ethic. He will be a spark plug in the middle of the lineup, while either manning 2nd base or 3rd base. Freshman DJ Lowery comes in with a lot of talent and will push for a starting role immediately this year, whether that is in CF or another defensive position remains to be seen, but Coach Moore has high hopes for him early. Freshman Login Tompkins is a left-handed arm that comes in with a high ceiling and ability to pitch already. He is another guy that may get looks initially on JV but will push for extensive playing time pitching on varsity as a freshman. Sophomore Carter Muth is a big bodied profile with a good arm that the Irish hope will take on a larger role this season on the bump. He is still somewhat raw but the potential is clearly present with him. Playing so many young guys could be the achilles hill season as many are set to make their first real contribution on varsity. If the Irish can ride the early waves of some growing pains, look for the club to be firmly in the thick of it with the likes of Baylor and McCallie.
