TN HS Team Preview: Sweetwater Wildcats

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Sweetwater Wildcats are feeling great about the 2024 season, following a 23 season in which they participated in the AA State tournament. Head coach Travis Watson is bringing back 5 returning position starters and 7 pitchers who all had significant innings. ‘24 SS and Vol State commit Tucker Lorenz looks to once again have a successful season playing where he will be a top of the lineup bat for the Cats. Lorenz is coming off of a junior campaign which saw him hit .372 with 30 RBI’s and 41 runs. ‘24 uncommitted OF/P Kai Correll is also looking for a solid season. He was named to the TWSA All state team last year in a season where he hit .383 with 5 hrs, 30 rbis and 40 R. On the mound he was 4-1 with a 3.18 era before being struck with an injury. Milligan signee UTL/P Blaine Watson will also be a prolific contributor following a season where he had a .395 avg, 35 RBI’s, 45 runs and was perfect with stolen bags going 23/23. The Cats also bring in a strong Junior class with Jayden Richesin and Cade Houser both were extremely critical in their playoff runs last year. RIchesin went 9-2 with a 2.1 era in 2023, and notched a win in the last 7 games he pitched in. Cade Houser is an uncommitted C/UTL who hit .326 last year, and .455 with 1.084 OPS in the postseason. The Wildcats are primed and ready to make another deep postseason run as they continue to swing great seasons together in Sweetwater. They have looked dominant in the early season so far.
