TN HS Team Preview: Lipscomb Academy Mustangs

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS

    TEAM OUTLOOK

Lipscomb Academy comes into the 2024 season as an experienced club with many returning starters on defense, as their infield pretty much stays intact. They will be junior heavy with D1 talent. The lineup order will have some overhaul as they lose 4 starters from last season, but expect the club to pick up where they left off, as last year's team finished with a bitter taste, losing in the semi finals of the state tournament. This should be plenty of motivation in itself to make it a 3rd consecutive trip there. Anchoring the outfield will be Prep Baseball Future Games alum Bo Strickland in center field. The junior is a versatile athlete that can handle middle infield duties as well when needed. In the 3-hole more than likely will be junior Samford commit and Prep Baseball Future Games alum Madden Williams, who likely slides back over to 1st base, but can also play the hot corner. His bat is for real and handles quality pitching, consistently barreling up baseballs to all parts of the field. Transferring in this season and providing a big boost will be another former Prep Baseball Future Games alum and Lipscomb University commit Malachai Halterman. The top-10 in state junior prospect likely slides in at 3rd base but can pretty much do it all playing all over the field, while also having a fastball that can reach 90 mph at times. Junior Nate Davidson will be back as the primary catcher and should slide up in the lineup as he had a great showing in last year’s state tournament where he had 3 hits in 3 games. Junior Masin Hall will also see his role expanded as he can play multiple positions in the infield, while also showing capabilities on the mound. Up the middle will be the top-10 sophomore class tandem of Tennessee commits in shortstop Jack Dugan and 2nd base Colten Springall. Both have matured their bodies since starting at those positions a season ago as freshman. The talented duo both hit from the left side of the plate and will spray balls into the gaps, while offering quality pitch recognition. They both more than likely will slide up in the lineup this year with the potential to hit somewhere in the top-half of the lineup order. Last season’s ace, Miller Green has since moved on to Vanderbilt and the club will look to fill his shoes with a slew of arms. Senior LHP and Charleston (West Virginia) signee Adam Gausman came on strong last season and offers a fastball in the mid 80’s. Juniper LHP Corbin Crosby has seen his fastball velo tick up and should sit somewhere in the mid 80’s this season with a developed changeup that should get hitters off balance. You also have a pair of experienced seniors in RHP Talan Loza and RHP Jacob Wendland. Both should push for expanded innings this season with district starting opportunities as they come in with back to back seasons pitching in the state tournament. The Mustangs should be a fun group of players to follow along again this season as they offer an exciting lineup that should hit for both power and average. The pitching also looks to be better than expected and if their starters can go deep into games routinely, expect them to be right at the top of the middle region yet again. Their schedule won’t be an easy one, as they will play multiple out of state opponents and 4A TN powerhouses throughout. However, this should ultimately aid them in their conquest of making three straight state tournament appearances with a chance to hoist the trophy at the end.
