TN HS Team Preview: McCallie Blue Tornado

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

    TEAM OUTLOOK

McCallie had an up and down season a year ago finishing 20-15 but were able to put it all together to beat Father Ryan in sectionals, thus booking their trip to the DII-AA state tournament where they would go 0-2 losing by 1 run in both games a piece. The Blue Tornadoes return quite a bit of talent with a good portion of their lineup returning. The team is deep with D1 talent and the club is a veteran unit this season with multiple seniors in the starting lineup with a handful of high level younger class prospects. Speed, speed and speed will be this teams strength as the club will be a stealing threat on the basepaths. In the leadoff position will be their sophomore center fielder and uber talented left-handed bat Noah Wilson. The dude is a legit pro prospect and will have a handful of suitors looking for his college signature this upcoming fall. The speed is legit with him as he has been clocked in the sub 6.5 range and there is hope the power continues to develop. In the 2-hole will be incoming junior transfer and Tennessee commit Chandler Jones who will settle into 3rd base. He is another guy with sub 6.8 speed and will also get looks on the mound this spring and catch when needed as that is his primary position. In the 3-hole will be senior shortstop and Belmont signee Nolan Sergeant. The left-handed hitter also comes in with sub 6.7 speed with some juice in the bat. Senior catcher and Charleston Southern signee Zach Porter will get the primary looks as their backstop and again is another guy that runs in the 7 flat range. He likely sticks in the cleanup spot where there is hope that the bat continues to produce at a high level with power potential. In the 5 hole will be unsigned senior Nick Gibson who will stick in a corner outfield spot, while also spot starting and getting extensive innings under his belt. In the middle heart of the order will be senior Lee University signee and 1B/LHP Hayden Choate. The fastball will sit in the mid 80’s from the left side with strike-throwing ability. The lineup is for real, as they will beat a lot of teams just from simply out-scoring their opponents. Pitching depth will be their weakness as they had two graduating arms that are now pitching in the Power 5 as freshman. There is hope that junior RHP Zachary Murray will take on a larger role than just a primary reliever. The arm comes in with a mid to upper 80’s fastball and if he can consistently throw strikes, may be the #3 they desperately need. Senior RHP Chap Bandy will be looked to provide adequate relief and can eat up innings, while also proving to handle spot starting. If their starting pitching can go deep into games against their region opponents, expect McCallie to have a more consistent winning season with another trip in store for them at the TSSAA DII-AA state tournament.
