TN HS Team Preview: Independence Eagles

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TOP RETURNING PLAYERS

    TEAM OUTLOOK

Independence comes into the 2024 season on the heels of a 4A state tournament finish with a 32-12 record in 2023. The lineup was deep a year ago and has since gone through some changes with players moving on to college but the Eagles do return quite a bit, and looked poised to be strong on the mound with talent, experience and even some youth looking to make their mark on the varsity roster. The Eagles will be led by the #1 player in the 2024 class and Auburn commit Saxon Roberts with the bat and with the ball in his hands. He should be somewhere in the top-half of the lineup order while being the ace on the bump with a fastball that has been clocked into the low-mid 90’s. He will be hard to beat and if he can control his walk total, should give them a chance to get an opening win in just about every district series. In the 2 spot looks to be junior LHP Noah Taylor that can get into the low 80’s. The number 3 is still anybody’s guess but freshman Caleb Carpenter looks strong already in the low 80’s with feel for the strike-zone and will push to solidify that spot. Defensively, Senior SS and Georgia Highlands signee Mark Harrel will be back there, while batting in the top of the lineup. The glove is smooth with athleticism and should be a factor to steal bags at a high clip. Junior OF Caleb King will be back somewhere in the middle heart of the order, while batting from the left-side. The bat carries some raw juice and should be an RBI producer for the club this season. Junior catcher Cash Money will presume his role as the primary backstop. He comes in with a prototypical catcher's frame at 6 foot 2 and 215 pounds and should be an RBI producer in the middle part of the lineup as well. Senior 1B Logan Money will take over 1B full time this season with another large frame and will slide into the middle part of the lineup somewhere. Senior Adrian College signee Peyton Miller takes over 2nd base full time, while also pushing for a district spot on the mound where he comes in the low to mid 80’s. The team will have a very competitive district with many looking to give their best shot against the Eagles. The pitching looks strong and if they can find their number 3 early, look for them to take control of that district yet again.
