TN HS Team Preview: West Rebels

Hunter Martin
TN Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Power 25 and much more.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

West High School comes into 2024 on the heels of a 13-22 record. March was not kind to them a season ago as they went 3-10 out of the gate and just couldn’t consistently stack wins together. They did have a win against eventual state tournament participant Walker Valley, but struggled against superior competition in Farragut and Hardin Valley. The Rebels were young a year ago and having quality senior leadership at the helm should aid them as they mix a total of 11 seniors with a handful of underclass prospects. Up the middle should be their strong suit as they have two middle infielders that have started as freshman in junior Fletcher Mays and sophomore Mason Dugan. All-around defense should be another strong suit as the Rebels have plenty of players with experience to mix and match with. Backstop looks to be ‘24 Konnor Glick while ‘24 John Whitesell will hold down 1st base. Junior Xan Schiedecker will man the hot corner at 3rd base while you have two senior outfielders in Emerson Howard and Keller Ware and a junior outfielder Isacc Hunter. DH spot looks like it is comfortably secure with Owen Winters handling the bat. The mound is where the Rebels will struggle as they lack high end pitching and depth. They do return senior RHP Duncan Gilpatric, who does have a multitude of innings under his belt. If the Rebels can have some guys step up on the bump and find ways to string hits together, they should be able to compete in District 4 with the likes of Karns and William Blount.
