MS HS Team Preview: West Marion Trojans

Matt Miller
State Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

West Marion returns 8 starters and every pitcher that contributed to a team that finished 19-13 last season, including a 2nd round playoff loss to Clarkdale. Coach Derrick Jerkins believes his returning pitching and solid team defense will allow the Trojans a chance to fight for a state title this season.

Top returners include seniors Jonathon Miller (SS/RHP - Southwest MS CC recruit), Nic Carney (3B/RHP - Southwest MS CC recruit), Jude Stringer (3B/RHP - Holmes CC recruit), Jacob Buffalo (OF/LHP), junior Trace McDonald (OF/RHP - Pearl River CC recruit), and sophomore Kolby Stringer (SS/RHP).

Miller, a Southwest MS CC recruit, will be expected to lead the offense once again after an impressive 2023 that included a .441 average and 27 runs batted in. McDonald, a Pearl River CC recruit, was the go to arm on the mound last season for the Trojans, sporting an 8-4 record with 95 strikeouts in just 53 innings and a 3.17 ERA.

Coach Jerkins is looking to also get production out of senior Kemareion Atkins (Pitcher) and junior Jaydan Vince (OF/P).

Top underclassmen will include sophomores Braxton Albritton (Catcher) and Hagen Forbes (1B/DH), who both contributed heavily to the Trojan in 2023.

West Marion begins regular season play on February 13th versus Columbia.
