Commitment Q&A: South McCoy

Colin Chamblin
Manager, Deep South Operations & Area Scout

OF South McCoy (Tupelo HS) is another standout who finds himself within the top-20 of our 2025 MS Rankings and has been on our radar for quite some time now. McCoy continues to make tremendous strides each time we see him. From our Scout Days with Easley Baseball Club, the Magnolia State Games and this past summers Prep Baseball Future Games at LakePoint Sports, we always enjoy seeing South perform both at the plate and defensively when making an appearance at our events.

OUR Q&A

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

South: I knew the recruiting process was going to be slow at first but once you get in contact with a couple schools it really picked up. I was looking for a school that sends players to the next level and with a great environment to be in like city, fans, etc.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

South: I was looking to stay in state which was a blessing for me to get the opportunity to. But also having connections in Hattiesburg is also great.

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

South: I started talking to some schools during my sophomore year. I first got to step in front of the Southern Miss coaches at a prospect camp and finally got to play in front of them this past summer.

PBR: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

South: I love everything about Southern Miss but a huge factor has to be the tradition of excellence which is one thing the program praises. Also the fans and environment play a role because the fans take so much pride in the school and will always have the team’s back.

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

South: Some schools that were on my list were Mississippi State, South Alabama, Memphis, and of course Southern Miss and I was blessed with the opportunity to commit and play in the future.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

South: Talon Haley has to be one of the toughest players I’ve ever played against. He’s got electric stuff from the left side and he’s got a lot of hype around him which he deserves, and that makes it a lot more exciting to face him.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

South: I had always dreamed about playing baseball in college and further after college but it really hit me that I had a chance once I got to high school. Once I joined EBC, and started competing against the best of the best and that’s when I knew I could do it.

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

South: I would give the advice of putting in work when nobody is watching because it won’t go unnoticed. Also give it your all and trust in the Lord because he has a plan for you.

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

South: My most memorable moment has to be having a multi home-run day during the PBR National Championship event in 2022.

PBR: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

South: Our team is going to be solid this year we have a lot of bats returning to our lineup from last year and we’ll have some good depth in our bullpen. Our season didn’t go how we wanted last year but don’t let that decide your view on us this year because we have had a lot of improvements.
