Canada Cup Day 2 - Lakeburn Park Games

Lakeburn Park, Moncton - After Day 2 of the Canada Cup got rained out, a full slate took place today, with some teams having to grind out three games on Friday.

The winner of the day was Ontario, and the losers were Quebec. Ontario 2-0 including a 7th-inning comeback win over BC earlier in the day, and a 17-0 drubbing of Quebec, who dropped both games they played. Manitoba also went 2-0, defeating Alberta and PEI

Here’s a quick summary of each game, and highlighting the top performers:

Manitoba 11 vs. PEI 8

Recap: In the first game of the day, this one picked up in the top of the second inning, a continuation of the rainout game a day prior. This was the first game that went into extras, and with the tiebreaker format in place, Manitoba put up five runs in the eighth inning, and PEI couldn’t fight back. The Islanders went up 5-1 early in the game, but lost steam throughout. Duncan Picketts led the way, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. For Manitoba, Trent Peters and Matt Boychuk were the catalysts. Peters collected three hits and an RBI while Boychuk went 2-for-2 with a walk, and RBI and a walk.

Manitoba 8 vs. Alberta 6

Recap: In their second tightly-contested matchup of the day, this game was won in the seventh inning as Manitoba put up a three spot, including a steal of home, which sealed an 8-6 win. Cam Thickson took the mound for Manitoba, giving up three runs on six hits over five innings. His fastball sat 86-88, while touching 89. Shortstop Jordan Lussier led the way for Manitoba, belting a solo home run and a double. For Alberta, Michael Brisson kept hitting, adding two hits to his week including a double, while catcher Ayden Makarus launched his first home run of the week.

Ontario 17 vs. Quebec 0

Recap: This was a drubbing in every sense of the word. Dante Wright and Owen Diodati each blasted three-run home runs, and that was just the start. Austin Gomm was a homer short of the cycle on his three-hit night, Noah Hull went 4-for-4 with a double, Ryan Leitch went 2-for-2 with two doubles and a pair of walks. Stephen Phillips got the ball for Ontario, and he diced to the tune of one hit over four innings, striking out four and walking one. The only bright spot for Quebec was Antony Gilbert, who added yet another double to his name.
