NCHSAA 4A Round 2 | Friday May 10, 2024

Asheville traveled to Pfafftown and Reagan HS on Friday to play in the 2nd round of the NCHSAA 4A Tournament.  The Cougars came out fast scoring 2 in the first and 2 in the second to build a 4-0 lead and get into the Reagan bullpen early.

Reagan turned to 2026 RHP Jacob Smith to stabilize the game and give the Raider offense a chance to get rolling.  Smith would work 3.2 innings, giving up just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.

In the bottom of the 2nd, the Raiders would answer the Cougars fast start. Smith helped his own cause reaching on an error, followed by two singles, scoring one run.  An error on a SAC Bunt attempt was followed by an RBI groundout and a safety squeeze to tie the game at 4-4.  Three hitters later, Mason Middleton doubled home Cole Rice to push the score to 6-4.

Smith tossed a zero in the top of the 3rd and momentum was back up in the air to see who would throw the next haymaker.  Leading off the bottom of the 3rd was Round 1 hero for Reagan, Charlie Stogner.  He smoked a home run over the right field wall, giving his fan base an encore of the walk off moment he had in round 1, pushing the Reagan lead to 7-4.

Reagan would push two more across in the 4th, getting to the final line score of 9-4.  Smith earned the win in relief.  Cole Rice tossed 1.1 innings behind Smith, and 2027 LHP S Rice worked an uneventful 7th to close the game.

Asheville starter Isaac Mingus took the loss, working 3 innings.  2024 Emery Fisher-Schmidt tossed the final 3 frames, giving up 2 hits and a walk, but limiting the explosive Reagan offense to no runs.

Asheville’s season comes to an end at 14-11.  Reagan advances to Round 3 where they will play a conference rival, West Forsyth HS.
