Division 1 Team Of The Week: 5th Edition - Macomb Dakota

MACOMB - A winning streak that reached 15 on Monday has followed the script for Angelo Plouffe, head coach of the Prep Baseball Division 1 Team of the Week.

“My outlook was that we would have pitching and defense and so far that has been the story of the season,” noted Plouffe, who led the Cougars to the state semifinals a year ago.

Last week there were 6-0 and 8-5 wins over South Lyon, 11-3, 15-1 and 2-1 victories over Romeo and a pair of shutouts against Lake Orion, 4-0 and 6-0.

“This is a talented group of young men,” pointed out Plouffe, whose team’s losses this year have been to Brother Rice (No. 1) and Stevenson (No. 15) twice each, Novi (No. 13) and Utica Ford. “We keep getting better every game and it’s fun to watch.”

Jadon Ford hit two home runs in one game with Romeo, Luke DeMasse gave up one earned run on five hits in eight innings of the 2-1 nine-inning win over Romeo, striking out 10, while Donovan Heugh tossed a three-hit shutout against South Lyon.

The strong pitching continued on Monday for the seventh-ranked D-1 team in Michigan, when Jake Andrews threw 6.2 innings of a combined no-hitter in an 8-0 win over Eisenhower.

DeMasse, the 10th-rated junior RHP in Michigan who is committed to Ball State, is 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA, fanning 34 and walking just four in 30.2 innings. Andrew Borowicz, a sophomore RHP, is 4-1 with a 2.80 ERA, striking out 28 and walking eight in 24.2 frames while Brendan Przybycki, a Macomb CC signee who is the 64th-rated senior right-hander in the state, stands 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA, recording 21 Ks while giving up 10 free passes in 26.1 innings.

Four juniors lead the way in the lineup according to Plouffe, with Braylon Ryan hitting a team-best .370 with six doubles, nine RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Ford, the 59th-ranked 2025 in Michigan, is batting .300 with 10 RBIs and 10 stolen bases, Evan Kavalick, the seventh-rated junior catcher in the state, is hitting .282 with five doubles and 19 RBIs while Luke Kavalick, the number seven 2025 outfielder in Michigan, has driven in 15 runs with nine stolen bases and a .293 average.

“Pitching and defense continuing at an elite level,” is the key to continued success according to Plouffe, whose Cougars are 10-3 in the MAC Red Division to earn at least a share of the title with two games to go, today and Thursday against Eisenhower.
