2024 Team Preview: Thibodaux High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the bayou state.  Each week, we will be releasing our players of the week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, and many more pieces of content.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

The 2023 Thibodaux baseball team had one of the most successful seasons in program history.  The Tigers finished the year with an impressive 26-11 overall record and made the post-season as the #15 seed in the LHSAA Non-Select DI playoffs.  They ended up winning a best-of-three series at home against the defending Class 4A State Champions, in South Terrebonne, before having to travel to Lake Charles, LA to meet with perennial state power Barbe in the second round.  Their season unfortunately ended there, as the Tigers lost the first two games of the series to the Bucs, by a score of 3-0 and 5-0 respectively.  Coach Shane Trosclair has a lot of guys to replace from a year ago, as Thibodaux only returns one starting position player and two starting pitchers from 2023.  The good news for Tiger fans is that a lot of the younger guys got to see the success of last year's team and are eager to prove their own worth this season.  The lone starting position player to return from last year is senior Tucker Carlos, who is a 6'1" 160 lbs. middle-infielder that earned 2nd Team All-District honors last spring.  Senior Cole Becnel will likely man the first base position for the Tigers this spring and offers another veteran presence in the lineup.  Keep an eye out for junior Hunter Guillot on the offensive side of things as well.  Turning to the pitching staff, Thibodaux returns two starting pitchers from a season ago and both are southpaws, and we all know that strike-throwing left-handers are really tough to beat at the high school level.  Senior LHP Taylor Fields is the first southpaw to return for Coach Trosclair's group this year and he gave last year's team a memorable performance in the first round of the playoffs.  In a winner-take-all game three against South Terrebonne, the uncommitted 6'0" 175 lbs. Fields tossed a complete game, the first of his career, as the Tigers beat the Gators 7-1.  The other returning southpaw for Coach Trosclair is a familiar face to him, as it his son, junior LHP Brody Trosclair.  We had the opportunity to see Trosclair earlier this fall at a Knights Knation Showkase, where he impressed with a mid-80's FB and really good feel for a sweeping SL.  Trosclair committed to Northwestern State not to soon after that event.  District 7-5A figures to be a competitive one again with blue-blood programs such as Hahnville and Destrehan, who both should have solid clubs.  There may be some growing pains in the early going for this year's team, but Coach Trosclair has built a winning culture at Thibodaux, so we fully expect the Tigers to be playing their best baseball in April, when it really matters.
