Canada Cup Day 2 - Kiwanis Park Games

Kiwanis Park, Moncton - After rain washed away what was suppose to be day 2 of the Canada Cup on Thursday, the schedule was jam packed with games beginning at 8:30am and the last game not finishing up until closer to 10:30

A great day at the yard with Canadian Baseball as teams looked to position themselves in Pool play for the final push on Saturday before Championship Sunday begins.

Below we recap games from Kiwanis with scores and highlights from day two of the 17u Canada Cup.

Saskatchewan 2 vs Quebec 1

Recap: An intense ballgame right from pitch one, Saskatchewan was able to get some big time defensive plays, along with timely hitting and pitching to walk away with a big 2-1 win over Quebec in the first game of the day. 2020 left-handed hitter Brody Alexandre supplied the offense going 2-3 with a run and RBI, he put together some impressive at-bats, going with an outside fastball for a knock the other way, polished hitter for a young 2020 grad. Second baseman Anthony Gilbert continued to swing a hot bat as he smacked a double and scored the only run for Quebec in the first inning while making plays and showing range at second base. Quebec had moments late in the game but a double play courtesy of centre-fielder Jayden Huls arm. He threw out a runner tagging from 3rd to end the inning and RHP Tyler McWillie came in to close the last two innings, touching 91 mph with his fastball and very much so looks the part of late inning reliever who can handle the pressure and pitch with his fastball/curveball combo and feed off the emotion and moment.

Ontario 3 vs British Columbia 1

Recap: A pitchers duel from the get go with both teams sending 2020 left-handers to the mound but not so similar repertoires. Ben Adams, the top 2020 prospect from Ontario was fantastic on the day, working 6.2 innings before having to be removed because of Baseball Canada pitch limit rule of 105 pitches. Adams was in control the whole way, working 83-85, touching 87 early on while Carlin Dick of BC matched him the entire way, taking a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th. The big hit came from Noel McGarry Doyle with 1 out in the 7th to plate CJ Maury, who had two hits already on the day to tie the score.

British Columbia 3 vs Saskatchewan

Recap: The story on this game was starter Joe Sinclair from BC. The 2019 left-hander was dominant from pitch one, only giving up 3 hits while striking out 11 hitters in his complete game shutout. His fastball worked in the 80-82 range, touching 83 and mixing in a curve with 2/7 shape and good downward action and depth. Josh walker was 2-3 and Adam MAier had the big knock in the first inning to score two and BC never looked back. Jackson Fraser, the 6-foot-6 starter for Saskatchewan is a very interesting 2019 and ran his fastball up to 86 mph while he worked in the 82-84 range for the majority of his outing.

New Brunswick 13 vs Newfoundland 12

Recap: A crazy back and forth affair with 13 runs being scored in the 7th inning alone. This game was the first that went into extra innings and the international tie breaker came into play with runners beginning the 8th inning at first and second with none out. A double play ended NL threat and the host New Brunswick where able to capitalize thanks to a bases loaded base hit through the drawn in infield by Sam McKinney. NB moves to 3-0 and holds down the top spot in Pool B.

Saskatchewan 1 vs British Columbia 0

Recap: The second meeting of the day between these two provinces, and pitching again was the theme with Carter Morris from BC displaying some of the best stuff we’ve seen this week, touching 90 multiple times and one of if not the best changeups here. Not to be outdone was Saskatchewan starter Kyle Froehlich who kept BC’s bats silent, only giving up 5 hits while punching out 6 over 6 innings of work.
