With the 2024 baseball season fast approaching, players are working tirelessly in the weight room, on the mound, and in the box to be the best version of themselves for the season ahead. Talented players are littered all over the province, however, with the season on the horizon, we want to preview 5 players in the 2025 graduation class that are looking to make an impact this coming season.

2024 Season Preview - Alberta Class of 2024 Watch List

Evan Russell RHP / St. Joseph Academy , AB / 2025

The uncommitted 2025 grad impressed our staff last fall at the St. Joseph’s/AHP Scout Day. He has a short, quick arm creating deception and was up to 85 mph at the scout day. He can spin both the curveball and slider north of 2400 rpm, with the curveball having over 10 inches of vertical depth. He does well creating unique profiles on the breaking balls with the slider having 12+ inches of horizontal break and being thrown slightly harder than the curveball (74 mph SL vs 70 mph CB). The changeup is also an effective pitch as he does a good job killing spin and locating it for strikes. With added strength and a velocity increase, Russell’s repertoire will jump to a new level as a growth in velocity will improve his already impressive spin numbers.

Miguel Tetreault 3B / RHP / AHP Academy , AB / 2025

Tetrault is widely known as one of the better defensive infields in his class. The uncommitted 2025 has athleticism that is apparent wherever he steps on the field. On the infield, he moves well laterally with a quick first step and the ability to get into a throwing position efficiently. In the box there’s plenty to like. The bat has twitch coming from an athletic and balanced swing. There's lots of pull-side power, having put out a couple balls at AHP’s scout day in the fall, but predominantly works on a line to all fields with present bat-to-ball ability. The next step for Tetreault will be to do damage in the box against some of the top arms in the province to prove that he can be impactful on both sides of the ball.

Hudson Kozicki RHP / RHP / Vauxhall, AB / 2025

Kozicki has the ability to spin and manipulate the ball better than most in his class. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Vauxhall Academy product has one of the best breaking balls on the West Coast because of that ability. He can spin his curveball north of 2700 rpm with over 17 inches of vertical depth and 13+ inches of horizontal break. The two-plane break allows Kozicki to get both OZ chase in IZ swing & miss. The fastball sits in the 82-84 mph range and works well with the changeup, at 71-74 mph, as he does a good job killing spin and velocity. The arm is loose from an over the top slot and he does well getting extension down the mound. The projection is there for Kozicki, and the uncommitted 2025 will be looking to have an immediate impact once his junior year kicks off.

Kaysen Young RHP / OF / AHP Academy, AB / 2025

Our first look at Young was last March at the Future Games Trials, but he really stood out in-game at a tournament over the summer with his ability to pound the zone and work both sides of the plate. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound RHP shows athleticism on the mound that allows him to repeat his delivery well. He has a quick arm and creates good extension, getting down the mound. His fastball was up to 84 mph in the fall and uses a slider down in the zone to create weak contact and OZ swing & miss. His changeup might be his most effective offering, thrown at 73-74 mph with over 19 inches of horizontal break. It’ll be interesting to see where Young is after an offseason of development.

Tyler Bonin RHP / 3B / Beaumont Composite, AB / 2025

We got a look at Bonin for the first time at the Alberta Fall Open in September of last year. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound two-way player impressed on the mound. With an athletic look, he has a quick arm and gets down the mound well. He sat in the 80-82 mph range with the fastball and mixed in a sinker, curveball, and changeup all for strikes. At the dish, he showed bat-to-ball with a short swing path elevating to all parts of the field. Over the offseason, Bonin has been up to 87 mph on the mound and it’ll be interesting to see how his secondary pitches look with that velocity jump.
