Alabama HS Team Preview: New Brockton Gamecocks

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The New Brockton Gamecocks continued their streak of reaching the playoffs in Class 3A in 2023, and will look to build off of last year's strong season with some key returners back this spring, especially on the mound. The Gamecocks look poised for a strong season this year, and hope to be playing their best baseball at the end of the season and set themselves up for a deep playoff run in 2024.

The Gamecocks return a solid amount of production from last year's team, including seven position starters and 10 pitchers back who saw time on the mound in 2023. It's always a positive to have some familiar faces back, especially upperclassmen, in the program when starting the new season, and the coaching staff hopes that leadership will pay off in the long run this spring. RHP/INF Payton Green (2024) is a talented returning two-way player who has served as a starter at the varsity level for the past three seasons for the Gamecocks. Green looks poised for another successful season leading this team, while RHP/OF Josh Gutierrez (2024) also returns as a senior after going 5-3 and compiling 70 K's as a junior last season. RHP/3B Trent Smith (2024) looks to be an impact transfer that will only boost this pitching staff and lineup, as he served as the top pitcher in the rotation at his previous school while collecting a 1.81 ERA with 63 K's and just 14 BB's on the mound. 3B/RHP Riley Simmmons (2024) and SS/RHP Dawson Peacock (2026) also will look to lead the way offensively this spring, as they both should hit near the top of the order. Simmons led the team in most statistical categories last spring with an impressive .446 batting average, while Peacock is a two-year starter and should hit in the leadoff spot this spring. Adding some depth on the mound, RHP/3B Jacob Fisher (2026) and LHP/1B Dalton Holloway (2026) are a pair of sophomores who should see more innings at the varsity level this spring. Both pitch in the low-80's and have a chance to be a big piece to their success on the mound.

The Gamecocks look strong once again on paper this spring, and will look to be a strong threat in Class 3A this spring. They'll compete in Area 4 against Daleville, Opp, and Pike County for a berth in the playoffs at the end of the regular season. New Brockton should once again be a strong favorite in their area this spring, and will be one to watch if they make the playoffs in Class 3A in 2024.
