STATEWIDE GAME OF THE DAY
No. 6 Joliet Catholic Academy (12-2, 3-0 East Suburban Catholic) scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth and went on to defeat No. 8 Nazareth Academy. Leading 2-1 in the home half of the fifth at Gillespie Field in Joliet, the Hilltoppers broke the game open, with a lot of help from Nazareth. The Hilltoppers scored the tying run on a wild pitch and then took the lead on bases-loaded walks to Mike Quiram and Keegan Tyrell. JCA scored the final run on a fielder’s choice. Connor Brandon had an RBI triple which was followed by an RBI single from Jake Howard, in the sixth. Drake Fellows (6-0) fired five innings allowing an unearned run with five strikeouts to pick up the win. Shane Gipson homered and Carson Bartels doubled home a run for Nazareth Academy (12-2, 2-1 ESCC). The two clubs will meet in La Grange Park on Wednesday at 4:30. PBR Executive Director Sean Duncan and Illinois Scouting Director Ryan Quigley, will have all of the action covered at Nazareth Academy on Wednesday. Monday’s contest was a rematch of the 2014 Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association/Phil Lawler Summer State Classic Championship, played on July 24, 2014 won by JCA 3-1.

No. 1 St. Rita (21-0, 5-0 Catholic Blue) blanked St. Ignatius 10-0 behind Matt Lenzen and Estaban Martinez. Lenzen fired a five-hit shutout at the Wolfpack to improve to 6-0 on the mound. Lenzen struck out five and walked no one. Martinez went 3-for-3, with a bomb and plated two Mustang runs. Mateo Zunica chipped in with a perfect 2-for-2 game with two runs scored.
No. 3 Mount Carmel (16-1, 5-0 Catholic Blue) overwhelmed St. Joseph 17-0 behind Jack Pappas. Pappas fired a two-hit shutout at the Chargers with seven strikeouts. Josh Stowers (Louisville), Ako Thomas (Michigan) and Alek Thomas all crushed baseballs that left the premises at Haggerty Field.
