2024 Team Preview: DeQuincy High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the bayou state.  Each week, we will be releasing our players of the week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, and many more pieces of content.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

DeQuincy enjoyed one of the best seasons in program history last year, after finishing with a 19-12 overall record.  The Tigers entered the 2023 LHSAA Non-Select D-IV playoffs as the #3 seed, which earned them a first round bye.  They then barreled through the competition in the second and third round of the playoffs, by beating Vinton 11-1 and Welsh 11-2, to earn a trip to the LHSAA State Tournament.  In the semifinal round, DeQuincy defeated Logansport by a score of 10-0, in six innings, earning their second trip to the state title game, and their first in 42 years.  The Tigers unfortunately fell to Oak Grove in the state championship game, by a score of 11-10, in 12 innings, in what turned out to be one of the best state title games of last year.  Coach Carlson and this year's Tigers team are looking to keep the momentum rolling that they built last season.  They'll have to replace a big piece of last year's team with the departure of Reese Ashworth, who has now moved on to the college ranks at LSU-Eunice.  Ashworth was a dominant force, both on the mound and at the plate, for the Tigers in 2023, as he hit at a .437 clip with 10 HR and 32 RBI, while also going 10-2 on the mound with a 0.95 ERA and 137 K's.  On the offensive side of things, the Tigers look to be lead by returning senior shortstop Quentin Pharris, who is a physical right-handed hitter.  Junior Carson Rainwater and sophomore Turner Rodriguez are also returning guys that should hit at the top of the Tigers order.  Rainwater and Rodriguez will both be heavily relied upon on the mound as well to make up for the loss of Ashworth's presence.
