2024 Team Preview: Jesuit High School

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the bayou state.  Each week, we will be releasing our players of the week, updating our Power 25 Rankings, and many more pieces of content.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook

Jesuit has one of the more storied programs in all of Louisiana and they had another stellar 2023 season, finishing with a 31-7 overall record, as well as their 22nd State Championship trophy.  The Blue Jays took down their district-rival, Archbishop Rummel, in the state title game by a score of 1-0.  Head Coach Kenny Goodlett will have several new faces this season, especially on the mound, as the team only returns one pitcher from last year's state title team in senior Everett Denny.  The uncommitted right-hander had a 2.13 ERA a season ago, and can run his FB into the upper-80's that pairs well with a sharp SL and quality CH.  Denny will also be relied upon as a position player, after hitting .327 last year as a junior.  Senior Patrick Berrigan returns in the outfield, after hitting .341 last season, and is a guy who has good range in the outfield.  Fellow senior Luke Werling hit .400 last year and controls the game extremely well from behind the plate.  Junior Jake Moreci started every game at SS last season and will be relied upon on the mound, as he and Denny will be the team's one-two punch.  Sophomore Michael Brothers started as a freshman last season for Jesuit, which is a huge accomplishment, and he finished the year with a .320 avg.  Brothers is also an excellent runner with 6.68 speed.  Jesuit will once again compete in the always tough Catholic League out of New Orleans, LA, and this year's district will likely be as tough as ever.  If we've learned one thing over the years, it's to never count the Blue Jays out.  Jesuit always seems to play really good defense, throw strikes, and get timely hits when they need them the most.  We fully expect for this year's Blue Jays team to be a contender come playoff time, as they look to win their 23rd State Championship trophy.
