New Orleans Rising Stars ID: Quick Hits

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Metairie, LA - Our first rising stars event of the new year was held this past Sunday February 11, 2024 at Mike Miley Stadium for our New Orleans Rising Stars ID.  This event consisted of prospects in the 2027-2028 classes and will serve as an identifier for our future invite-only events such as our Top Prospect Games, State Games, and Junior Future Games.  Today, we continue our post-event coverage of the event with another edition of Quick Hits, which focuses on some of the prospects that caught our eye.  Be sure to follow us, on all of our social media platforms, for continued coverage of the New Orleans Rising Stars ID!

+ 2028 SS/RHP Kason Perry (Covenant Christian HS)

5'9" 155 lbs. with wiry strength and a lot of quick-twitch.  The Covenant Christian HS product was one of the better all-around performers on Sunday.  On the infield, he showed athletic actions with soft hands and a strong arm across the diamond up to 86 mph.  Offensively, he works from more of an upright and slightly open stance and uses quick hands and present bat speed, while working gap to gap with exit velocities up to 87.5 mph.

+ 2028 OF Cooper Babin (Catholic BR HS)

The former Jr. Future Gamer was one of the top hitters on last summer's Louisina team that took home the 13U Championship, and on Sunday he continued to show why he's likely one of the best hitters in the state's 2028 class.  The Catholic product gradually loads into his back hip and gets the barrel on-plane early and stays on the ball a long time through extension.  Babin can drive the ball to either gap and can handle pitches in any part of the zone.

+ 2028 RHP Cole Albert (Vermilion Catholic HS)

6'1" 140 lbs. with long limbs and a ton of projection.  Albert is another former Jr. Future Gamer who caught our attention last summer and is an arm that we're excited to see develop over the next few years.  He works through a quicker delivery and uses a long & loose arm action to release the ball from a 3/4 slot.  He controlled his 77-78 mph FB well and flashed a developing CB and SL, while showing really good feel for a late-fading 66-68 mph CH.  A jump in velocity is a pretty good bet for the Vermilion Catholic product, as it is likely a matter of when not if.

+ 2028 OF/RHP Reis Wascom (Catholic BR HS)

Athletic and lean 5'11" 145 lbs. frame with plenty of room to add strength.  The Catholic product was one of the better two-way guys in attendance on Sunday.  On the mound, it's a pretty simple and repeatable operation, and he uses a short and quick arm action to release the ball from a 3/4 slot.  His FB got up to 78 mph and he showed the ability to command it well to the glove side, while also flashing feel for spin with a short/tight 67-69 mph SL that averaged 2194 RPM's.  Wascom also showed promise at the plate, using a direct path to contact, while maintaining length with his barrel through extension.

+ 2028 INF Cooper Templet (St. Amant HS)

One of the most consistent swings and BP rounds on Sunday belonged to the former Future Gamer.  The St. Amant product works from a balanced and athletic stance with relaxed hands, and works short to long, while working inside/out through the baseball with minimal effort.  Templet repeats his swing and really understands how to hit the ball up the middle and to the opposite field.  He's also a good athlete that posted one of the best 60 times of the day at a 7.21.
