MS HS Team Preview: Pisgah Dragons

Matt Miller
State Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Pisgah returns 5 big-time producers from a team that finished 25-10 in 2023, including a trip to the 2A State Championship. Coach Sam Starnes believes experience along with quality pitching will be key factors in his Dragons quest to return to Trustmark Park.

Top returners for Pisgah include seniors Aiden Swales (Catcher - Hinds CC recruit), Mason Huddleston (1B/RHP - Pearl River CC recruit), juniors Ian Holliday (INF/RHP), Paxton Prisock (3B/1B/RHP), and sophomore Ryder White (OF/RHP).

Swales, a Hinds CC signee, is hoping to repeat the type of year he had in 2023 in which he led the Dragons in runs batted in with 49. The catcher also slugged 6 home runs and carried a .363 batting average. Holliday was another bat that came through heavily last year, finishing second in runs batted in with 36. White, a dual threat, led the team in innings in 2023 with 66, while sporting a 3.36 ERA. He looks to be a go to arm in big games, along with help from Prisock, who tallied 43 innings last year. Coach Starnes also expects to get help from sophomore Austin Sanders (RHP) this season.

Pisgah opens regular season play on February 12th versus Enterprise.
