MS HS Team Preview: Purvis Tornadoes

Matt Miller
State Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Purvis returns 6 positional starters and 4 pitchers from a 2023 roster that went 32-6 and captured the 4A State Championship after a series win over West Lauderdale at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Head Coach Tony Farlow feels 2024 could be an exciting year as well as the Tornadoes still have the bulk of the production both offensively and on the mound back from last year’s spectacular season.

Top returners for Purvis will be seniors Eli Lowe (RHP/INF - Holmes CC recruit) and Austin Lawler (OF), juniors JoJo Parker (SS/RHP - Mississippi State recruit), Jacob Parker (CF/RHP - Mississippi State recruit), Ethan Walker (Catcher), Cannon Turner (3B/RHP), and transfer Banks Teater (Catcher - Southern Miss recruit) along with sophomore Hudson Walker (OF/DH).

Twins JoJo and Jacob Parker will look to lead the Tornado offense once again after both had monster numbers in 2023. JoJo hit .487 with 15 home runs and 44 runs batted in while Jacob hit .434 with 14 HR and 42 RBI’s. They have help and that will make things scary for opposing pitchers. Former Future Gamer Ethan Walker (.340, 6 HR, 36 RBI), Cannon Turner (.303, 2 HR, 17 RBI) will look to provide added production. Transfer Banks Teater, another former Future Gamer, is yet another power bat added to this destructive lineup.

On the mound Eli Lowe returns after a registering a perfect 10-0 record with a 1.85 ERA. He along with JoJo Parker, who turned in a 8-1 record and 1.62 ERA, will look to lead the charge from the bump. Jacob Parker, Cannon Turner, and a few other option will provide depth for Coach Farlow as they look to repeat in a solid 4A class.

Purvis begins regular season play on February 13th versus Oak Grove.
