MS HS Team Preview: Sumrall Bobcats

Matt Miller
State Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

4A powerhouse Sumrall returns 5 positional starters and 5 pitchers from a team that finished 2023 with a 28-7 record and a trip to the South State Championship series. The Bobcats came up short in a battle versus the eventual state champions, the Purvis Tornadoes. Coach Andy Davis believes his pitching, defense, and overall team speed will be key components to another very deep playoff run.

Top returners for Sumrall include seniors Cade Clinton (C/OF - Holmes CC recruit) and Malek McNair (OF), juniors Leo Odom (RHP/1B - Ole Miss recruit) and Landon Hawkins (3B/RHP), and freshman Drew Davis (SS/RHP).

Cade Clinton was a big run producer last season, finishing with a .357 average, 5 home runs, and 38 runs batted in. He should get help from Landon Hawkins who added 27 rbi’s and speedy Malek Mcnair who picked up 24 stolen bases. The pitching staff will be led by freshman Drew Davis who had a season to dream of a year ago as he went 14-0 with a 0.97 ERA while striking out 76 opposing hitters as an 8th grader! Dual threat Leo Odom hit a solid .356 last season with 21 rbi’s and will be heavily counted on to throw in big games in 2024.

Coach Davis is also expecting help from senior ST Maust (C/OF - MS Gulf Coast CC), juniors Cadyn Williamson (LHP/OF), Kellan Garcia (MI/RHP), and Jack Miller (RHP/1B). Miller picked up 4 wins last season to go with his 3.21 ERA.

Underclassmen looking to step up are sophomores Braelyn Harrison (OF) and Brayden Murphy (RHP).

Sumrall begins regular season play on February 15th versus Seminary.
