Canada Cup Day 3

Moncton-  With Day 3 of the Canada Cup in the books, today was do-or-die for some provinces. New Brunswick and Ontario were the only two teams that punched their tickets into the Championship Round early, while the rest of the field battled for the final spots.

After a disastrous Friday, Quebec managed to knock Saskatchewan out of the tournament, enough to earn a spot into Sunday. With that, Quebec will need to win three games in order to win Gold.

Here’s a quick summary of each game, and highlighting the top performers:

Nova Scotia 5 vs. Alberta 7

Recap: Alberta edged out a scrappy Nova Scotia squad in the early morning matchup, with standout performances coming from both teams. Alberta sent Cohen Achen to the mound, and he spun five innings of seven-hit ball, three strikeouts and four walks. While he gave up five runs, only two of them were earned. Ayden Makarus, who launched a solo homer the night before, kept on swinging a hot bat, going 2-for-3 with a double and one walk. At the top of the order, Kai Reum went 3-for-4 with two runs and one stolen base. Across the diamond, Micah McDowell, Evan O’Toole, and Chris Ritchie collected two hits apiece, while Ethan McLellan was saddled with the loss.

Ontario 5 vs Saskatchewan 3

Recap: With Ontario’s win, they clinched first place in Pool A as a strong performance by Jake Rogers out the pen, striking out 7 over his three scoreless innings of work and timely hits from Eric Martin, Dante Wright, and a rocked of a sac-fly from Noel McGarry Doyle produced the offense. Kendall Keller did all he could for Saskatchewan going 2-3 with a double, RBI, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.

British Columbia 11 vs. Quebec 1

Recap: For the second time in less than 12 hours, Quebec was victimized by yet another mercy. It was the same story as the night before against Ontario, as they only managed to bang out two hits, while making two errors. British Columbia has struggled to find the bats this week, but they finally woke up on Saturday. The West Coast club came out strong with 11 hits in the shortened six-inning game. Brad Cox led the way, going 3-for-4 with four RBI’s, a double and two runs scored. Josh Walker, Connor Caskenette and Jaden Cull also added two hits each in the win. BC arm Adam Maier went the distance, giving up two hits, two walks and the lone run.

Quebec 7 vs Saskatchewan 4

Recap: In a must-win game between two heavyweight teams, Quebec rolled out Junior National Team right-hander Vic Bergeron, while Saskatchewan handed the ball to Blake Pongracz. In a back-and-forth game, Quebec held a 4-1 lead into the fifth when Tyler McWillie drilled a moonshot, three-run homer to tie the game 4-4. Quebec answered by in the sixth when Cedric De Granpre hit a bases-clearing double to give his team a 7-4 lead, which would stand as the final score. De Granpre had three hits for Quebec, while Tristan Aspeck added two. Before being pulled at pitch count, Bergeron went 5 â…” innings, striking out nine while giving up four runs and six walks. Connor Sparks went 3-for-4 for Saskatchewan, Brody Alexandre went 2-for-4 with a double, and McWillie went 2-for-4 with a homer.

Ontario 5 vs British Columbia 8

Recap: With Ontario already in and clinched first place in Pool A, it was easy to see that they were saving their arms as two-way players Eric Martin and Carter Arbuthnot stepped up on the mound. BC however was playing for second place and the bats stayed hot as Madjk Mackenzie had two hits and Adam Maier was 3-3. Carlin Dick flexed his muscle lacing a double off the right-field wall for 2 RBI’s and Reid Dawson went 5 strong to secure their spot in the semi-finals on Sunday.
