Madison Rising Stars ID: Takeaways and Statistical Analysis
March 15, 2024
On March 9th, the Prep Baseball Wisconsin staff traveled to GRB Academy in Windsor, Wis., to host the annual Madison Rising Stars ID. This event featured prospects from the 2028 and 2029 graduating classes and has consistently provided our staff with the names of players to consider inviting to the PBR Junior Future Games where they’ll represent Team Wisconsin at LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA., at the end of the summer.
Now, at the event's conclusion, our staff will begin to compile some of our takeaways from this event while also hitting on some of the day's stat leaders. Below you'll find which players popped to our scouts, as well as which prospects headlined our respective statistical categories.
TAKEAWAYS
+ INF/RHP Maxwell Webb (Port Washington, 2028) took one of the cleaner rounds during our annual Madison Rising Stars event. Out of an open and balanced setup, Webb consistently barreled the ball from gap-to-gap and certainly showed some upside. Defensively, Webb projects as a quality up-the-middle defender in the future, as he featured quality actions and soft hands. On the mound, Webb ran his fastball up to 76.3 mph while showing feel for an upside low-60s curveball and an upper-60s changeup.
+ OF/RHP Ian McClure (Reedsburg Area, 2028) is a long-limbed 6-foot-3, 180 pound two-way who already has some intriguing tools to his game. Firstly, he showed off some upside athleticism when he ran a 7.02 60-yard dash time, which was the event’s best. Then he registered a 82.4 mph max exit velocity from a simple right-handed swing and was able to drive the ball back through the middle of the field during his round. During outfield defense, his hardest throw came in at 83 mph which teases his innate arm strength. He also recorded the hardest fastball of the event at 78.8 mph from an upside delivery. He also flashed some feel for a gradual 11/5 breaking curveball.
+ INF/RHP Kallen Magli (Deforest, 2028) showed off some athleticism to kick off Saturday’s event, as he recorded one of the top 60-yard dash times of the day at 7.22. He then took a clean round of BP where he sprayed line drives to all parts of the field, with his hardest batted ball of the day coming off at 83.4 mph. During his ‘pen, Magli featured a simple delivery and paired with a shorter arm path into a lower ¾ slot. His fastball sat in the mid-70s, while topping out at 78.1 mph. Both of his breaking balls featured some upside spin metrics, while his changeup played with some fade to the armside.
+ LHP/OF Braxton Thiede (Jefferson High, 2028) is an upside southpaw from Saturday’s event. During his ‘pen Thiede sat in the mid-70s while running his riding fastball up to 77.5 mph. He was also able to kill spin on his changeup in the low-to-mid 60s. With the bat, he took controlled swings from the right-side, and flashed some feel for the barrel with a 86.2 mph max exit velocity.
+ OF Ian Justman (Ashwaubenon, 2028) features an upside 6-foot-1, 155-pound frame and kicked off his day by recording one of the better 60-yard dash times of the event at 7.36. With the bat Justman, a left-handed hitter took short and compact swings to the ball, registering a max exit velocity of 85.4 mph.
+ INF/OF Jett Allen (Marquette University High School, 2028) recorded the hardest batted ball of the event at 92.4 mph from a quick and intentful swing. In both the infield and outfield, Allen flashed some upside defensively, working aggressively through the ball and paired it with a stronger arm. On the mound, he featured a raw but intriguing skillset, where he ran his fastball up to 74 mph, while flashing feel for both a curveball and changeup.
+ LHP/1B Samuel Patterson (Sauk Prairie High, 2028), LHP/1B James Wasemiller III (Rockford Lutheran School (IL), 2028) are a pair of southpaws that flashed some potential on the mound during our time in Madison. Patterson featured a fastball up to 77 mph, with feel for a changeup with fade and depth tendencies. As for Wasemiller, he ran his fastball up in the mid-70s with feel for a pair of breaking balls and a changeup, too. Both of them also flashed some intrigue with the bat, taking simple swings from the left-side during their rounds of BP.
+ INF Mason Molitor (Reedsburg Area, 2028) impressed with both the bat and in the infield. Molitor featured some of the day’s best overall actions and best overall feel for the game. He showed off his quick hands during the hitting portion of the event with consistent line drive contact to all fields from his smooth left-handed swing. In the infield, Molitor showcased first step quickness and bounce ranging up the middle and deep to the back hand. His arm was accurate through the first baseman with the ability to make both the difficult and routine play. His arm strength and overall strength are coming which should allow him to stick on the left side of the infield in the future.
+ OF/LHP Luca Miller (Deforest Area, 2028) was an interesting two-way prospect in attendance on Saturday. Miller hits from the left side of the box with quality rhythm in his swing, producing loose, free and easy bat speed which resulted in consistent barrel contact to all fields. The left-hander showcased a three-pitch mix on the mound with a consistent and repeatable delivery.
+ C Jurength Tiedemann (Watertown, 2028) is a switch-hitting outfielder with a natural swing from both sides of the plate. It’s a short, compact, and well-sequenced swing with the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Tiedemann showcased soft hands and the ability to block balls in his work behind the plate.
+ OF Hunter Hovestol (Delavan-Darien, 2029) is listed at an athletic and projectable 5-foot-7, 148 pounds. He opened some eyes with the bat when he sprayed the ball throughout his round of batting practice from a downhill bat path. Hovestol was one of the youngest players at the event and not only held his own, but put together one of the better performances of the day.
+ INF/C Jackson Suttle (Brookfield East, 2028) showcased a natural swing sequence that caught the attention of our staff. Suttle’s short compact swing and quality use of his lower half produced solid line drives through the middle of the field throughout his round. Once Suttle adds size and strength, we can envision him popping as a name to know in the state.
+ RHP Alex Franz (Brookfield East, 2028) is listed at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds with some strength to his frame already. Franz featured a fastball that he threw downhill and was able to consistently throw strikes with it to set up his secondary offerings. Franz has a 11/5 shaped curveball that he consistently got to the lower part of the zone and a slider with tight break.
+ RHP Dominic Melby (Brookfield East, 2028) is a long levered and projectable 5-foot-10, 140 pounds. On the mound Melby repeated an athletic delivery with whippy arm speed through release showing both a four-seam and two-seam fastball. He also showcased a curveball and feel for a change up. More velocity and a harder breaking curveball are in Melby’s future as he fills out his frame and makes him an interesting prospect going forward.
