Updated & Expanded 2021 State Rankings

The 2021 class in California is full of players that have already garnered national attention and many more that will soon follow suit. We felt this class could be special mid-way through the spring while the summer reassured us of that feeling. Many of these rising sophomores have gained valuable experience in the spring on their varsity teams and certainly during the summer circuit.

The summer season provided a lot of insight into players in the 2021 class as they head into fall/winter conditioning workouts and games where they'll continue to develop physically, as well as technically, in preparation for their sophomore seasons next spring. Our team of scouts have scoured the state for the top prep players in this class and have had multiple viewings on the players in our rankings. Many of these viewings came at our PBR events that have been held across the state.

Our scouts had many discussions to review our initial lists and make necessary adjustments based on what they saw last spring and this past summer. The overall list was presented, torn down, picked apart, recreated, torn down, and picked apart again before our scouts concluded on what we present here.

In the end, our scouts agree that our updated and expanded 2021 Top 50 Player Rankings accurately reflect the talent of the class in California.

THE TOP FIVE:

The top overall spot in the 2021 class stays with RHP/1B Alonzo Tredwell (Mater Dei HS), a UCLA commit, made a name for himself in the Trinity League last spring with both his bat and arm on the mound. At 6-foot-4, 190-pounds Tredwell is a physically imposing player that shows a live, loose arm on the mound along with the ability to drive balls into the gaps at the plate. Featuring a quick arm with consistent and clean mechanics, Tredwell's projection is through the roof.

Moving into the No. 2 spot is SS Cody Schrier (JSerra HS), a USC commit, is coming off a spectacular summer with the 15U National Team. Among other awards he won Tournament MVP for his performance. Schrier appeared to take the next step with his hitting about midseason in the spring and he's maintained that into the fall. His actions and arm strength on the infield should give him a chance to stick at shortstop while his developing power should continue with more consistency.

Coming in at the No. 3 spot is UTIL Roc Riggio (Thousand Oaks HS) a left-handed hitting power bat who shows defensive versatility in the outfield, infield, and behind the plate. Riggio shows a smooth and powerful left-handed stroke that already has the attention of baseball people. Quick to the ball and long through it with barrel control is how Riggio attacks pitches and it's what makes him one of the top hitters in the class.

Shortstop Marcelo Mayer (Eastlake HS) showed all spring and summer that he has the tools to be one of the elite shortstops to come out SoCal in recent years. His tools are above average across the board defensively with sure hands and plus footwork. Mayer's bat flashes special traits that really project with continued physical development making it easy to see why he's so highly thought of in baseball circles.

Rounding out the Top 5 is SS Davis Diaz (Acalanes HS) who was the starting shortstop on one of the top teams in the state in the spring and carried that into a second straight summer on the 15U National Team. Diaz has soft hands, sure feet, and projectable arm strength to go with excellent body control. A present gap-to-gap approach with line drive ability, Diaz projects for added strength and power at the plate.
