TN HS Team Preview: Anderson County Mavericks

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Tennessee.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Murfreesboro at The Spring Fling as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Tennessee. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Volunteer State.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Anderson County comes into the 2024 spring season off of a 23-15 record in 2023 that saw them close out their season in regional play against a really solid Halls team. The expectations are pretty high as the Maverick’s return every positional starter on last year’s squad, while also returning an enormous amount of pitching depth and their entire starting rotation. It starts with Milligan College signee Aydin Bond, who is their staple leadoff hitter and everyday shortstop. Not only that, but he should be in the 1/2 mix for innings pitched when it is all said and done. He helped secure their lone win in playoff play last year with a complete game 7 IP, zero earned runs against Seymour giving up only 3 hits. He will be a big time leader on a club that returns a lot of valuable playoff baseball experience. You then have 3 hole hitter Lane Fletcher, who holds some college offers, and will move to the outfield full time. He also had a quality season a year ago and is looking to build off of that. Morgan Clark will also be back and cover 1st base, while also showing some ability on the mound where he should eat up innings. McCauley White returns on the bump and will push for a mainstay in the rotation. He was invaluable down the stretch a year ago going deep into games. Luke Lankford should slide into a DH role and provide some pop in the lower part of the order. Juniors will have Alex Bond, who offers some length with a strong arm at 3rd base. Ty Wilson will be back behind the dish and will slug somewhere in the middle heart of the order. Reece Wilkerson is the other part of the middle infield duo and will move over to shortstop when Bond takes the hill. Trent Stricklan is a speedy outfielder that has some pop and looks to settle into the outfield somewhere. Easton Beaty is the other outfielder, while also offering some projection on the mound. You have one sophomore in utility man Daniel Unthank, who had a lot of opportunities last season as a freshman on varsity and looks to expand his role this year. Freshman prospects include a pair of athletic outfielders in Jackson Harris and D.J. Pierce, who looks to be the number 1 on JV this season. This team returns a lot of depth and experience, something that is always needed when trying to make a deep run into the postseason. Look for the Mavericks to be in the top half of District 4, with a chance to draw a favorable matchup come regional play. They have arms for days and will be tough for anyone in a tournament based format.
