All-State Prospect ID Showcase: Catchers Analysis

On Tuesday, June 9th, we hosted the All-State Prospect ID showcase at Grand Park in Westfield, IN. The event was open to all high school players and included; 2 (2015's), 13 (2016's), 19 (2017's), 23 (2018's) and 6 (2019's).  Below we analyze the catchers from the event.
 

In Alphabetical Order 

Alec Brunson, C, DeKalb HS, 2018: 6-foot-1, 170 pounder possesses an athletic frame.  Pop times were 2.15-2.26 and was 72 mph from the crouch.  Actions are still raw defensively, but should improve as he gains experience.  At the plate hits from a tall, open setup.  Loads back with a short stride.  Shows good balance.  Short path to the baseball with average bat speed.  Recorded a high exit velo of 81 mph.  

Brayden Clark, C, Western HS, 2018: 5-foot-10, 200 pounder uses a balanced stance behind the dish.  Shows some stiffness in his hands when receiving.  Overall raw actions, but should improve as he gains more experience.  Pop times were 2.22-2.34 and was 69 mph from the crouch.  Offensively, hits from an open setup with a minimal to no load.  Stride is short with average balance throughout the swing.  Level path to the ball produced line drives.  Recorded a high exit velo of 76 mph.  

Cade Fitzpatrick, C, Franklin Central HS, 2019: 5-foot-10, 165 pounder was 67 mph from the crouch and produced pop times of 2.10-2.20.  Tendency to come way around the ball on his throws to 2B. Possesses a good arm action, but does drop his arm slot down too much showing more of a side arm action.  At the plate starts from an open setup.  Loads back, hands drop.  Long stride with average bat speed.  Uphill path, pull-side hitter.  Recorded a high exit velo of 74 mph.  

Joe Gallatin, C, Muncie Central HS, 2016: 6-foot, 160 pounder possesses soft hands behind the dish with solid receiving skills.  Gets up on his toes in his primary and is balanced in his secondary.  Possesses quick actions.  Pop times were 2.10-2.19 and was 70 mph from the crouch.  Gets momentum going forward on his throws to 2B, but needs to use more of his lower half.  Overall athletic defender.  Offensively, hits from both sides of the plate.  From the left side hits from a balanced setup and uses a short stride. Smooth load.  Stiff lower half.  From the right side starts balanced using a longer stride.  Loads back, slight arm bar.  Gets wide.  Shows quicker hands and more juice from the right side of the plate.  High exit velo of 78 mph.  

Stephen Karis, C, Zionsville HS, 2018: 5-foot-9, 140 pounder received the ball well with soft hands.  Shows a balanced setup in his primary and secondary positions.  Blocks well with some athleticism.  Pop times were 2.07-2.13.  Tends to pop up on his throws to 2B, but showcased quick feet and a good arm action.  From the crouch was 75 mph.  At the plate starts slightly open with a smooth load back.  Stride is shrot with average use of the lower half.  Level path to the baseball, consistently squared up balls.  Recorded a high exit velo of 85 mph.   

Justin Kelso, C, Avon HS, 2019: A 5-foot-7, 135 pound young receiver showcased a good stance behind the dish.  Still shows some rawness with hands when receiving.  Gets wide in his secondary.  Pop times were 2.59-2.69 from an over the top arm slot.  Comes around the plate.  Offensively, hits out of a balanced, crouch type setup.  Stride is short with average balance. Long, level path to the baseball.  Registered an exit velo of 68 mph. 

Jimmy Kizer, C, Ben Davis HS, 2016: 6-foot-1, 190 pound receiver possesses good hands behind the dish with solid receiving ability.  Good balance in his primary.  Shows quick feet and a good transfer on his throws to 2B.  Could get better use of his lower half on his throws.  Pop times were 2.08-2.19 and was 74 from the crouch.  At the plate loads back and uses a short stride.  Uphill path with average bat speed.  Recorded a high exit velo of 84 mph.  

Grant Oexmann, C, Vincennes Lincoln HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 168 pound receiver shows good balance behind the dish.  Firm hands.  Pop times were 2.08-2.12.  Hands come around on the transfer.  Showcased good footwork.  Once he gets ready to throw he does show quick arm speed.  From the crouch was 76 mph.  At the plate hits out of a narrow setup.  Long stride with some use of his lower half.  Overall good balance.  Short, level path to the baseball.  Shows some rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velo of 78 mph.  

Gabe Reel, C, Hamilton Heights HS, 2018: 5-foot-10 , 160 pound catcher possesses firm hands behind the plate.  Tendency to be too open in both his primary and secondary positions.  Pop times were 2.37-2.44.  Needs to quicken up the transfer and use his lower half more, doing so should improve his pop times.  Showcased good feet.  Offensively, hits out of a balanced setup with a smooth load.  Stride is short.  Long path to the baseball.  Tendency to roll over on pitches.  Recorded a high exit velo of 74 mph.  

Kyle Richardson, C, Zionsville HS, 2018: 5-foot-8, 170 pound receiver showed the ability to block and receive well.  Possesses soft hands and an athletic setup.  Pop times were 2.04-2.10 with a quick transfer and good footwork.  Stays in line well.  Throws were on target at 72 mph.  Overall quick actions defensively.  At the plate hits out of an open setup and loads back.  Stride is short with good use of the lower half.  Possesses good bat speed for a 2018.  Level path and gets to extension.  Line drive type hitter.  Recorded an exit velo of 80 mph.  

Zachary Styka, C, Mount Carmel HS (IL), 2018: 6-foot, 185 pound receiver possess a strong, athletic frame.  Behind the dish sticks the ball really well.  Actions are stiff, but did show some athleticism when fielding the bunt.  Pop times were 2.10-2.20, should improve times if he quickens up the transfer.  Comes around the ball.  73 mph from the crouch.  Offensively, hits out of an open stance.  Loads back, short stride.  Good use of the lower half with good balance throughout the swing.  Possesses quick hands and gets to extension.  Consistently barreled up the baseball with some pop.  Recorded a high exit velo of 84 mph.  

Brayden White, C, North Putnam HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 210 pound receiver sits low in his primary.  Tracks the ball well with soft hands, ability to stick pitches.  Pop times were 2.01-2.12 and was 77 mph from the crouch.  Offensively, hits from an open setup.  Loads back with a short stride.  Showcased a big swing, producing line drives with some gap power.  Tendency to drop his hands during the load.  Recorded a high exit velo of 82 mph.
