FL JUCO State Tournament Standouts

Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

A weekend that included Mother’s Day, multiple four-hour games, home runs, a bevy of arms 95 mph or better, and a ton of all-around talent, the Florida Junior College State Tournament had a little bit of everything. While the remaining teams are still battling both each other and the weather in Lakeland, today we took a look back at some of the standouts from the games over the weekend.

Hunter Perdue, RHP, State College of Florida
The freshman came out electric in his first inning. He has a lot of moving parts in his delivery and has some present effort, but the arm was extremely quick. He would work 94-96 mph in the first and flash a hard, late breaking slider at 81 mph. He settled in around 92-94 touching an occasional 95 mph. He has an up tempo delivery and when everything is in sync he works down in the zone. He was a little erratic after the first, but the fastball/slider combo both flushed as plus. He will be a very high follow for next year, if someone doesn’t take him in this draft.

Nelson Alvarez, RHP, Miami Dade
South Florida recruit. The 6-foot-4 right-hander has a big, strong, lean frame. He has made a big velocity jump since early spring. In his relief outing, he worked 94-97 mph. While the velocity is elite, he struggled somewhat throwing strikes. When he separates on time and doesn’t rush to release, he works down in the zone with life. He also showed a feel for an above average changeup. Despite some command issues, the rise in velocity on a big strong frame has him on the rise.
