Division IV Team Of The Week: Week 5 - Leipsic

LEIPSIC - Leipsic head coach Darren Henry points to consistency as a big reason for a great start to the season.

The Prep Baseball Division IV Team of the Week rebounded from its first loss of the season with three wins to enter play this week at 13-1, beating Bluffton 8-6, Allen East 5-2 and Patrick Henry 6-1.

“We felt we would be competitive in both leagues because of the six players we had coming back,” related Henry, whose squad is unbeaten in both the Northwest Conference and Putnam County League. “So far, we have just been very consistent on how we have played.”

The Leipsic mentor pointed to pitching as the key a week ago.

“This past week we had three good pitching performances,” Henry said. “Tyler Lammers came in against Bluffton and really did a nice job, Tommy Offenbacher was good against Allen East and John Dewar went the last five innings against Patrick Henry and did a nice job.

“As far as hitting, Tyler Walther has had a couple big hits in tight games. Otherwise, it has been different players who have had big games.”

While all the players mentioned are juniors with the exception of Dewar who is only a freshman, it has been seniors Quin Schroeder and Ethan Zeisloft who have “been the most consistent hitters” according to Henry, with both hitting better than .400 on the season.

“The consistent good play has surprised me the most,” noted Henry, whose Vikings are ranked fourth in the state in Division IV. “We also have been playing some freshmen who have handled themselves well.”

The Vikings, whose lone loss on the season was to Division III sixth-ranked Liberty-Benton, are now 5-0 in both leagues after picking up a 14-6 NWC win over Delphos Jefferson on Monday. A PCL game with Pandora-Gilboa is on tap Tuesday with NWC contests against Ada on Thursday and Crestview on Friday later in the week.

“The key to continuing our success is to remain focused each game,” Henry said. “This is baseball and you never know what is going to happen.”
