Top-10 Profiles of 2023: No. 3 Ethan Bass

By: Pete Hamot
Area Scout, Staff Writer

Coming in as our third most-viewed profile of 2023 is SS/RHP Ethan Bass (Glenbrook North, 2026; Illinois commit). Bass has long been regarded as one of the top prospects in the Illinois 2026 class since we first laid eyes on him in April of 2022, and he’s only gone up from there; now sitting at No. 1 overall in the state and No. 14 in the country after an impressive 2023 campaign.

Listed at an uber-athletic 6-foot-2, 165-pounds, Bass has a high-waisted and projectable build that is likely to continue to trend up as he matures physically. The right-handed hitter has a knack for hard contact at the plate, creating an exit velocity up to 101 mph this past winter as well as at the Illinois State Games this past summer with a max distance of over 360'. The Illinois commit is an advanced defender on the infield with well above-average speed (6.87-60 time), boasting soft hands with fluid actions, moving well to both sides of his glove with a quick first step and easy range. He also has advanced arm-strength, topping out at 90 mph across the infield with the ability to play on the move and from multiple arm slots. He provides plenty of intrigue on the mound as well, as he can reach up to 88 mph with his fastball (+2500 RPM) with up to 19” of run, pairing with a curveball/slider combination to keep hitters off-balance.

Bass already saw a considerable amount of time on varsity last spring as only a freshman, and you can expect him to play a large role for Glenbrook North this coming spring on both sides of the ball.

Scouting Report

10/06/23

Currently ranked No. 14 nationally, and No. 1 in the state, UTL Ethan Bass (Glenbrook North, 2024; Illinois commit) looked the part this weekend. Bass measures in at a loose-levered 6-foot-2, 160-pounds with room left to fill in the frame. Bass contributed at the plate and on the mound this weekend for Top Tier, showing real two-way potential for the next level. Offensively, Bass is a right-handed hitter who has a tall setup in the box with a high leg-lift trigger that keeps him balanced throughout his swing. Bass was able to tally a couple hits during our look on Sunday. On the bump, Bass has a fluid, clean operation down the mound throwing from a repeatable ¾ arm slot. Bass’s repertoire contained a fastball that played in the low-to-mid 80’s, touching 86 mph with life through the zone (2500+ rpm). Bass would work in an upper 60’s breaker that showed downer action for whiffs when needed. Bass finished the day with nine strikeouts over 4.2 IP.
