Prep Baseball Report's IA Underclass Prospect Games event took place on Monday, August 1, 2016. The event was held at Duane Banks Field; on the campus of the University of Iowa. The event featured 2018, 2019 & select 2020 prospects from Iowa who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff and the University of Iowa coaching staff.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the IA Underclass Prospect Games.

pitching Prospects

Gavyn Ashley, SS/RHP, Muscatine, 2018
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.55 runner. Square stance with simple load, out front at contact, solid contact, works middle of field, 77 mph exit velocity. Shows some actions in field, tends to sit back on balls, fields deep into body, stiff arm action from ¾ slot, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; controlled delivery, pie arm action, with solid extension to plate. Short arm action on fastball, slight downhill plane, at 77-78 mph. Curveball, thrown at 68-70 mph, showed inconsistent shape and break.

Zach Barden, OF/RHP, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2020
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.28 runner. Square stance, long stride to contact, out front, flat bat path, gap to gap approach, ground ball contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Good direction with feet, fields cleanly, stops after release, minimal use of lower half and momentum to throw, low arm slot, elevated throws, avg. accuracy to target, 70 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; uptempo actions, swings front leg down mound, short arm action, with upright posture at release. Fastball was straight at 74-76 mph. Changeup, thrown with stiff wrist, was 65-68 mph.

Drew Beazley, SS/RHP, Johnston, 2018
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.34 runner. Open stance, strides to square, easy load into swing, low hand slot, transfers weight well through contact, works middle of field, 82 mph exit velocity. Shows solid actions in field, soft glove, adequate range, accurate arm across, 83 mph arm across infield. Strong follow in IA 2018 class. Loose athletic actions on mound, repeats well, with good extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 82-83 mph; thrown with long clean arm action. 70-73 mph slider is an above avg. pitch with sharp break and depth.

Jared Beck, LHP, Davenport North, 2018
6-foot-10, 185-pound left-handed pitcher. Interesting follow in 2018 class. Repeats mechanics well and has good body control for size. Fastball is downhill for consistent strikes at 82-84 mph with tilt. Consistently lands breaking ball in zone for strikes at 65-68 mph with early break and solid 12/6 shape. Also a basketball player; could make huge jump on mound with continued work on mound. Strong follow in IA 2018 class.

Jackson Bennett, 1B/RHP, Beckman Catholic, 2018
6-foot-4, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Strong projectable build. 7.25 runner. Open stance, strides to square, front heel turn trigger, present strength, flashes pop in bat, long through hitting zone, tends to lean back at contact, 90 mph exit velocity. Easy actions at first with good glove, range, and accurate arm, 83 mph arm from first base. Runs just enough, has clean arm action, move to outfield might be beneficial. Overhead delivery, lands across body occasionally, and is aggressive down mound to target. Fastball was straight, with flashes of cut action, at 80-83 mph. Threw better breaking ball than previously seen; with conviction and intent, commanded the zone with pitch at 66-69 mph. 11/5 shape with solid depth. Changeup had flat action at 66-67 mph. Strong Follow in IA 2018 class.

Lucas Bixby, RHP, Dewitt Central, 2019
6-foot-3, 155-pound right-handed pitcher. Controlled delivery, slight pause after balance point, and lands slightly across body, good extension to plate. Long loose arm action from high ¾ slot. Fastball was 72-75 mph and projects to increase velocity. Changeup was thrown with above avg. arm action; showing late fade for strikes at 70-71 mph.

Jacob Bockenstedt, RHP/3B, Cedar Rapids Washington, 2018
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Athletic delivery on mound with body control, slight tuck and turn with high leg kick, and has direction to plate. Arm is free and loose. Throws fastball downhill at 81-84 mph. Solid rotation and shape on curveball at 72-74 mph. Changeup is thrown at fastball arm speed at 71-73 mph. 7.21 runner. Spread stance, front heel turn trigger, rotational bat path, short to contact, good hand-eye coordination, mid/pull approach with ability to use whole field, consistent solid line drive and ground ball contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Good footwork in field, ok actions, soft glove, quick release, accurate to bag, long arm action, 83 mph arm across infield.

Nathan Chasey, RHP/SS, Gilbert, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Loose athletic delivery, hitch at balance point, long clean arm action, drives fastball downhill with good hand speed. Fastball was 79-81 mph for strikes. Tends to slow arm on secondary pitches. Curveball has solid shape; thrown at 65-66 mph and changeup was in zone for strikes at 70-72 mph. 7.18 runner. Balanced swing, short to contact with quiet head, stays through at contact, consistent solid contact, gap to gap approach, occasional pop in bat, 80 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, soft glove, clean arm action, some actions, accurate arm across, 81 mph arm across infield.

Will Christophersen, RHP, Pleasant Valley, 2018
6-foot-4, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Controlled rocker step to balance point, longer arm action, and lands closed to target with good direction. Ball comes out of hand well, solid life, and has command of strike zone. Fastball, thrown at 85-88 mph, showed arm-side life. Breaking ball was 70-73 mph; with flashes of tight rotation and late break. Changeup is solid third offering thrown at 71-73 mph. Strong follow in IA 2018 class.

Connor Crabill, RHP/3B, Dubuque Hempstead, 2018
5-foot-9, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Up tempo delivery, slight crouch at balance point, with drop and drive mechanics, good extension to plate, throws with some effort. Fastball was 81-84 mph with late cut action. Shows above avg. command of fastball to glove side of plate. Curveball is inconsistent early; flashed two above avg. to outer half of plate later in outing at 70-72 mph. Throws changeup for strikes at 74-76 mph. 7.76 runner. Open stance, strides to square, high hands, stays on top of baseball, line drive approach, aggressive swinger, gap to gap approach, hard contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Tends to field and throw flat-footed, decent glove, fields deep occasionally, accurate arm with carry to bag, 76 mph arm across infield.

Aiden Crowley, IF/RHP, Iowa City West, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.13 runner. Balanced setup, strides slightly across, cuts off lower half, bat path dips underneath to contact, gap to gap approach, 83 mph exit velocity. Active feet, plays with energy, avg. glove, stiff shoulder in throwing motion, sinking action to bag with solid accuracy, 77 mph arm strength. On mound; collects over rubber, solid direction to plate, with finish. Heavy wrap on backside of arm action. Fastball, thrown at 76-78 mph, has late sinking action. Curveball, with 12/6 shape, has heavy feel and is thrown at 67-69 mph.

Jace Davidson, LHP/1B, Pocahontas, 2019
6-foot-1, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Uptempo delivery, high leg kick with good body control, tucks front side early, able to see pitch out of hand early. Fastball had varying quality run and cut action at 76-79 mph. 1/7 breaking ball has good shape, tighter rotation, and is thrown at 63-64 mph. 7.7 runner. Square stance, double tap trigger, line drive swing plane, mid/pull approach, high stiff finish through contact, 78 mph exit velocity. Active fielder, good glove, works through baseball well, accurate arm, 75 mph arm strength.

Duncan Davitt, RHP/3B, Indianola, 2018
6-foot-3, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled delivery, tall balance point, with direction and finish to plate. Has good extension on fastball, clean arm action, and ball jumps out of hand. Fastball was 83-86 mph, touching 87 mph, with late 2-seam life. Inconsistent shape on breaking ball; thrown at 72-73 mph. Changeup was thrown with fastball arm speed at 75-77 mph. 7.89 runner. Wide square stance, body load, short leg kick trigger, minimal weight shift through contact, pull approach, out and around at contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Fields and throws flat-footed, funnels ball deep into body occasionally, usable glove, solid carry and accuracy on throws, 81 mph arm strength across diamond. Strong follow on mound in IA 2018 class.

Kyle Denison, RHP/OF, North Scott, 2018
6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Tall lean build. Slight tuck and turn delivery, long arm action on back-side, good deception, ball comes out clean from mid ¾ slot. Quality sink on fastball at 74-76 mph. Tight rotation on 65-68 mph slurve. Above avg. fade on changeup at 62-63 mph. 7.22 runner. Pre-set hands and load, dives back shoulder in swing, out and around at contact, pull approach, heavy top spin contact, 74 mph exit velocity. Loose actions and moves well in outfield, longer arm action, low release effects carry, accurate to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield.

Owen Durham, RHP/3B, Carlisle, 2018
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Shows rhythm and sequence in delivery, has extension out front, OT arm slot, longer stride- tends to leave arm behind. Fastball was downhill at 79-81 mph. 12/6 breaking ball was 64-67 mph. 6.79 runner. High hands, stays on top of baseball, front heel turn trigger, slight arm bar, drags through zone occasionally, spray contact with line drives and ground balls, 85 mph exit velocity. Pretty light on feet, good reactions, works through baseball, clean quick arm action, solid carry and accuracy to bag, 76 mph arm across diamond.

Andrew Fox, OF/RHP, Des Moines Christian, 2019
5-foot-8, 135-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.37 runner. Simple setup with easy load, balanced through swing, short to contact, good hand speed through zone, line drive and ground ball contact, 75 mph exit velocity. Solid direction on throws, avg./ok feet and glove, clean arm action, solid carry and accuracy to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound, simple delivery with good body control, lands slightly across body, with long easy arm action. Fastball shows quality arm-side life at 74-78 mph. Curveball was consistently up in zone and lacked finish.

Carter Frey, SS/RHP, WDM Valley, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.21 runner. Open stance, strides to square, flat line drive bat path, solid extension through contact, flashes hard pull contact, 77 mph exit velocity. Active feet, stiff glove, shows some actions, clean arm path, solid carry and accuracy, 74 mph arm strength. On mound; controlled delivery, tall balance point, and throws downhill. Short arm action with solid hand speed. Fastball, thrown from OT slot, was 77-79 mph. Sharp break on slider with depth at 72-73 mph. Changeup was above avg. to LHH, at 70-73 mph, with late fade and sink.

Graham Geraty, RHP/3B, Dowling Catholic, 2019
5-foot-10, 200-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled step into balance point, up tempo down mound, longer arm action, clean out front. Inconsistent command in this outing. Fastball was straight at 72-75 mph, curveball with varying shape was 65-67 mph. 7.89 runner. Open stance, strides to square, clean line drive bat path, good weight transfer, inconsistent contact, pulls off occasionally, 80 mph exit velocity. Soft glove, active feet, works around bag well, clean arm action, 72 mph arm strength.

Jayden Gibson, C/RHP, Grinnell, 2019
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.34 runner. Pre-set hands, minimal load, longer stride to contact with length, minimal weight shift, pull approach, 82 mph exit velocity. Works around plate with feet, clean exchanges, quick release, accuracy to bag, quiet receiver, avg. blocker, athletic with mobility behind plate. 73 mph arm strength with 2.00-2.08 pop times. On mound; controlled delivery, explodes down mound, and has direction to plate. Short arm action producing 78-80 mph with varying cut and sink. 2-seam fastball showed above avg. late movement on RHH hands. Short break with depth on 11/5 curveball; thrown at 71-72 mph.

Luke Golla, LHP, Marion, 2018
5-foot-10, 175-pound left-handed pitcher. Good sequence to delivery, hitch in hand break creating deception, lands hard across body, some tilt to fastball through zone. Fastball has avg./ok life with occasional late running action at 76-79 mph; touching 81 mph. Good consistent shape on breaking ball, 1/7 break, with avg. depth at 63-65 mph. Changeup was 70-73 mph.

Sam Goodman, SS/RHP, Western Dubuque, 2019
5-foot-11, 155-pound switch-hitting 2-way player. 7.3 runner. Spray contact, with solid pop in bat, and mid/pull approach from left-side. Longer stride right-handed, loses posture at contact, solid contact, mid/away approach, with line drive and ground ball contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, tends to sit back, soft glove, quick release on throws, solid arm strength and carry for age, 80 mph arm strength. On mound; simple turn into crouched delivery, good hand speed, throws with short arm action. Fastball has cut action at 82-83 mph. Slurvy breaking ball was 67-68 mph. Consistent strike thrower and filled up zone.

Andrue Henry, 3B/RHP, Dubuque Senior, 2020
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 9.01 runner. Square stance, compact swing, stays on and through baseball, works middle of field well, aggressive swinger, transfers weight through contact producing solid line drive and ground ball contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork with easy actions, glove works, quicker release, good carry and accuracy on throws, 74 mph arm strength. On mound; controlled delivery, minimal use of front side, with short stride down mound, tends to throw all arm. Fastball, delivered from OT slot, was straight at 71-74 mph. Changeup was 67-68 mph. Curveball, thrown at 64-65 mph, had 12/6 shape and early break.

Zach Hollingsworth, OF/RHP, Des Moines Lincoln, 2018
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.77 runner. Taller open stance, strides to square with front heel turn trigger, rotational lower half, flat plane through zone, consistent solid line drives, 80 mph exit velocity. Covers ground in OF, solid glove and feet, long extended arm action, avg. carry on throws, misses arm-side occasionally, 82 mph arm strength. On mound, shows rhythm and body control in delivery, long extended arm path, one piece arm action, solid finish to plate. Fastball was 79-81 mph, straight, and thrown for strikes. Rolling early break on 12/6 curveball at 65-67 mph. Changeup was 69-71 mph.

Landon Howard, LHP/OF, Gilbert, 2019
5-foot-7, 135-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled delivery, high leg kick, works down the mound well, lands slightly across body, and has good hand speed with clean arm action. Controlled strike zone well for age. Fastball was downhill at 72-75 mph. Breaking ball was 63-64; and changeup was 67-68 mph. 7.48 runner. Square stance, inconsistent stride, some dip in bat path, hands are short to ball, uses whole field, solid contact, 73 mph exit velocity. Active feet, fields on side of ball effecting direction to target, long projectable arm action, throws are online with accuracy, 80 mph arm strength.

Clayton Hromidko, RHP, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2019
5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed pitcher. Live arm that topped out at 90 mph. Relatively simple mechanics, long clean arm action, and drives ball down the mound with intent. Fastball showed slight downhill plane with cut action at 85-88 mph; touching 90 mph. 11/5 curveball, thrown with good arm speed, has solid shape and break. Changeup was firm; thrown at fastball arm speed. Strong follow in 2019 IA class.

Skyler Juhl, 3B/RHP, Pekin, 2018
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.41 runner. Moves well on balls of feet, shows range, above avg. glove- shows ability to pick baseball, accurate arm, 73 mph arm strength across diamond. Starts hands out front, active knee to knee trigger, narrow base, spins up and through zone, inconsistent spray contact, 80 mph exit velocity. On mound; short arm action with uncontrolled mechanics in wind-up. Fastball is flat, from OT slot, with moderate effort at 77-78 mph. Curveball at 68-69 mph; needs continued improvement.

Austin Krob, LHP, Lisbon, 2018
6-foot-1, 190-pound left-handed pitcher. Simple repeatable arm action, some drop and drive, lands on hard closed front foot, with slight collapse on release. Easy arm action and ball jumps on hitter. Fastball has late run with solid life at 80-82 mph; touching 84 mph. Throws above avg. breaking ball with 1/7 shape, tight rotation, and is present strike out pitch at 70-73 mph. Raw mechanically, but shows easy effort, projectable velocity, and has above avg. second pitch. Strong follow in IA 2018 class.

Tyler Lewis, RHP, WDM Valley, 2018
6-foot-4, 230-pound right-handed pitcher. Strong durable build. Simple mechanics, repeats well, with short balance point, and solid extension out front. Sinker slider type arm. Moderate effort- turns fastball over early occasionally. Fastball showed hard sinking action at 83-87 mph. 12/6 breaking ball had solid shape and depth. 76-77 mph slider was thrown with intent and flashes future above avg. pitch. Strong follow in IA 2018 class.

Nic McCay, RHP/C, Carlisle, 2018
6-foot, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Avg. build with stronger lower half. Repeats mechanics well. Strike thrower, stays compact in delivery, clean short arm action, with solid extension and finish to plate. Breaking ball is separator with above avg. shape and depth; potential to be strike out pitch; thrown at 70-72 mph. Fastball showed varying run and sink, worked to both sides of plate, at 82-84 mph- touching 85 mph. Changeup was 72-73 mph. 7.6 runner. Early hand load, controlled double tap trigger, on time consistently, mid/pull approach, clean line drive swing plane, pulls off of contact keeping 2 hands on bat. 85 mph exit velocity. Clean exchange with quick release, above avg. accuracy to bag, stands up to throw, decent footwork and direction, 72 mph arm with 2.07-2.1 pop times. Good blocking skills with above avg. lateral movement, high glove setup occasionally, needs work on low pitch, active behind plate controlling game.

Bradley Melvin, RHP, Pleasant Valley, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Controlled delivery, short arm action- some length out front, lands across body, slight cross-fire delivery creating deception and hiding ball from hitter. Flat action on fastball at 76-79 mph. Curveball was 67-68 mph and changeup was 67-68 mph.

Quinn Morris, LHP/1B, Muscatine, 2018
6-foot-5, 220-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Solid balance and direction to plate, stiff one piece arm action, short on release with minimal extension. Fastball was 71-74 mph with flat action. Curveball lacks arm speed, loose shape and break, at 58-60 mph. 7.57 runner. Strong setup, body load, rotational lower half, bat exits zone early, flashes strength at contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Fields flat-footed, usable glove, shows ability to receive around bag, short arm action, 71 mph arm strength.

Will Nigut, RHP, Des Moines Lincoln, 2018
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Tall lean frame with long legs. Clean repeatable mechanics, longer arm action, inconsistent glove side mechanics. Solid hand speed out front. Showed spotty fastball command early; was more efficient and command zone better in second inning. Fastball was 80-84 mph with slight cut action. Slider, thrown at 68-72 mph, is better breaking ball presently with solid shape and depth. Changeup is firm and flat at 75-76 mph.

Cade Nolan, OF/LHP, Jesup, 2019
5-foot-8, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.69 runner. Square stance, easy load, strides inline, clean line drive bat path, rotational lower half, pulls off baseball occasionally, mid/pull approach, 76 mph exit velocity. Aggressive in outfield, works through ball, short arm action, avg. carry and accuracy to target, 74 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; deep rocker step, swings into balance point, crouched through delivery, short arm action with decent hand speed. Underneath fastball, causing flat action, at 69-72 mph, touching 74 mph. Breaking ball was inconsistent at 61-63 mph.

Konstantinos Papazoglou, C/RHP, Fairfield, 2019
5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Sturdy build with above avg. strength for age. 7.34 runner. Active lower half, short to contact, flashes pop in bat, consistent hard line drives, pull approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Extra step in footwork, above avg. arm strength, quick release from varying slots, avg. accuracy with long with release on throws, 79 mph arm strength with 2.06-2.14 pop times. Solid blocker and receiver, avg. mobility. Has arm strength and pop in bat; raw mechanics. Young player that should continue to develop. On mound; swings into tuck and turn balance point, good direction to target, and lands closed. Some wrap on backside of arm path and cuts across body in front. Fastball was 73-77 mph with varying action. Early break slider at 66-69 mph. Tumbling action on changeup.

Carlos Rivera, 1B/LHP, Pleasant Valley, 2019
6-foot, 240-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.63 runner. Hitchy load, late launch position, quick hands, hard line drive contact with top spin, 88 mph exit velocity. Late glove presentation, fields underneath body, avg. accuracy, works to play through ball, 72 mph arm strength. Varying delivery, mostly high leg kick into balance point, collapses down mound losing leverage on fastball, short arm action, flat action on fastball, tends to leave breaking ball arm side with early break and 1/7 shape. Fastball was 72-75 mph and curveball was 64-65 mph.

Bryce Schares, RHP/2B, Don Bosco, 2019
6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Crouch in delivery, short balance point, long extended arm circle behind body, falls off to first base side. Fastball was 73-75 mph with flashes of cut action, curveball was 63-64 mph, and changeup was 61-63 mph. 8.15 runner. Athletic stance, late load effects timing to contact occasionally, clean line drive bat path, flashes pop in bat to both gaps, 80 mph exit velocity. Good pre-pitch movement, fields underneath, soft glove, late presentation, long easy arm action from low ¾ slot, 73 mph arm strength.

Tyson Tucker, RHP, Maquoketa Valley, 2018
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Some rhythm and tempo to delivery. Short arm action, throws from ear, and ball jumps out of hand. Fastball had solid life with varying run and cut action at 81-85 mph. Tends to wrap breaking ball early, loose spin, thrown at 66-68 mph.

Bryan Verdon, RHP/OF, Davenport North, 2019
5-foot-8, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Short rocker step, uncontrolled front leg, falls out of balance point early, and has above avg. arm strength. Short clean arm action with hand speed. Fastball was 82-85 mph with flat running action. Curveball is above avg. with tight rotation, 10/4 break, and thrown at 74-76 mph. 7.18 runner. Tall square stance, collapses into contact, slight uphill path, short finish, flashes pull pop in bat, 84 mph exit velocity. Shows good feet and glove in field, plays through ball, need better throwing footwork, solid carry and accuracy to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield.

Quinn Waterhouse, LHP/1B, Bondurant-Farrar, 2018
5-foot-10, 140-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Controlled delivery, solid body control, slight collapse at balance point, average hand speed. Fastball showed running action and had good movement when down in zone; 71-73 mph. Solid depth on breaking ball at 60-61 mph. Changeup was 62-64 mph. 8.3 runner. Simple load, collapses to contact, short path in/out zone, flare contact with mid/pull approach, 69 mph exit velocity. Makes routine plays, avg. glove, fields underneath occasionally, long clean arm action, 71 mph arm strength.

Ben Wilkins, RHP/1B, Greene County, 2018
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Swings into balance point, short arm action, and cuts early across body on release. Pie arm action, some life to fastball, and 2-seam has good late action. Fastball was 77-80 mph. Changeup was 68-69 mph. Curveball has inconsistent shape and break at 66-68 mph. 7.52 runner. No load or stride, pre-set hands, limited use of lower half, fly ball contact, length in swing, 74 mph exit velocity. Stiff glove, fields close to body, one piece arm action, 72 mph arm strength.

Peyton Williams, 1B/LHP, Johnston, 2019
6-foot-5, 205-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Slightly crouched stance, stays inside baseball, line drive contact, short finish, falls back at contact, 83 mph exit velocity. Avg. feet, solid range, shows soft glove, one-piece arm action with long release, 75 mph arm strength.
