2024 Spring Invitational Preview: Harvard-Westlake

Matt Monk

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - For the third consecutive year, the 2024 CIF-Southern Section high school baseball season will again kick off with the premier spring high school baseball tournament in Southern California, the Prep Baseball California Spring Invitational.  The 16 team field will compete in a bracketed, winner-take-all format that will once again feature many of California's top prep baseball teams. This tournament holds massive implications for our Power 25 State Rankings and annually gives pro scouts an early glimpse into how some of the area's top draft prospects perform out the gate.

We continue with the Harvard-Westlake Wolverines, a CIF Southern Section Division I school out of Studio City competing in the Mission League. Led by 12th year head coach Jared Halpert, the Wolverines went 21-9 last year turning in a second-round exit in playoffs.

Harvard-Westlake enters the 2024 season with returning impact players such as '24 RHP Tommy Bridges (TCU), '24 RHP/SS Bryce Rainer (Texas), '24 RHP Duncan Marsten (Wake Forest), and '26 OF/MIF James Tronstein (Stanford). Halpert said, "The Wolverines return one of the most impressive pitching staffs in the country. Led by Senior Tommy Bridges, Duncan Marsten, and Bryce Rainer."

Newcomers to the varsity team looking to make an impact by filling vacancies or platooning with upperclassmen include '25 RHP/OF Jackson Alex, '26 OF Ethan Price, and '26 C Michael Gonzalez.

And while they may be a year away in some instances, the Wolverines have some underclassmen looking to break into the lineup and rotation including '26 OF Will Suslow, '27 C Drew Rico, '26 RHP Jake Chung, '27 RHP/3B Justin Kirchner, '27 C Nate Blum, and '27 LHP Lucas Rosenberg.

We will get to see a full range of players and the first test of Harvard-Westlake's depth at the Preseason Invitational as the Wolverines look to solidify and define their lineup and rotation for the 2024 season.
