2019 Tournament 12 Day Two Game Recaps: Volume 1

Red vs Navy

Drew Howard RHP / SS / All Saints, ON / 2020

Report: Howard, an uncommitted 2020 RHP, worked two perfect innings and his fastball was up to 90 mph, it was dominant, getting swings and misses on the fastball as it was sitting 88-89 mph. Arm was quick and loose with a repeatable delivery, allowing him to pound the strike zone from a ¾ slot. Curveball was tight with with 11/5 shape and velocity in the low 70’s, keeping hitters uncomfortable and off balanced. Howard continues to develop and hone himself on the mound as he was clearly too much for opposing hitters at times

Owen Caissie OF / Notre Dame, ON / 2021

Report: Caissie’s tools stood out at yesterday’s Scout Day and carried over into game action. Reached base three times and showed some opposite field power with a double to the left field warning track. Ran the bases well, stealing two bases and used his speed to cover ground in centre. Second game reached base all four times with three walks and a single. Plate discipline is there, doesn’t work or chase outside of the zone, there is feel to hit while the power upside, along with his natural athleticism is making him one of the most talked about players in Toronto this week.

Mitch Bratt LHP / OF / Newmarket, ON / 2021

Report: Bratt, a recent Florida State commit, sat 85-87 with his fastball and topped out at 88 in his two innings of work. It’s an easy, loose and repeatable delivery from the 2021 left-hander. Mixed in a curveball at 75 mph and was getting swings and misses with both pitches. Just one walk, one hit and minimal barrels on the day for Bratt. Good showing after a long summer of travel and innings for the 2021 grad.

Cooper Crompton RHP / Walnut Grove, BC / 2020

Report: Uncommitted 2020 Cooper Crompton of Fraser Valley in BC had an impressive outing on the mound this morning. The 6-foot-5, 160-pound right-hander had clean arm action, was working on a downhill plane and had his fastball in the 85-87 range. Showed some feel for his changeup that had fading action and was an effective secondary pitch during his two innings. Could prove to be a nice late steal for a school looking to add a 2020 arm. It projects well with the actions and strength to come as he matures.

Luis Pimentel Guerrero OF / SS / Corpus Christi, ON / 2022

Report: Pimentel Guerrero is an uncommitted 2022 who got rolling early today, sending a line drive back up the middle in the first inning for an RBI knock. While that was his only hit in the game, it was the athleticism and speed that really jumped out. Stole second and third base after the first inning single and used his speed to track a few balls down in the gap. One of the youngest players at the event but Pimentel didn’t look out of place at any point. It’s loose and whippy from the left side with bat speed to handle velocity, even though he still a puppy and nowhere near what he’ll be in the coming years.

Maroon vs. Green

Maddux Mateychuk RHP / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2020

Report: Mateychuk is an uncommitted 2020 right-hander from Vauxhall Academy with a big frame, standing at 6-foot-3, 217-pounds. Held his velocity throughout the two innings at 90-91 mph and topping out at 92. The arm is long, working from a ¾ slot with drop and drive through a strong and thick lower half. It’s heavy and got on hitters with weak contact, limited viewing of any secondary stuff, mixed in one changeup at 81. There is polish to be added, especially with the off-speed but the velo plays right now and is an arm that doesn’t come around too often up North.

David Calabrese OF / St. Elizabeth CHS, ON / 2021

Report: Calabrese, an uncommitted 2021, continued to impress today racking up three hits, including an opposite field double and pulled a triple to the right-field warning track. It’s a quick stroke from the left side, hits balls to hard to all fields and really has a feel for the barrel. Was moving well all game on the bases and added a stolen base as well. Continues to prove he’s one of the top uncommitted talents at the event. Easy power 5 guy, right now.

Russell Young C / OF / Langley, BC / 2020

Report: Gonzaga commit, Russell Young was on time all day in Day 2 action of games. It seemed like every time he stepped up to the late, he barrelled balls. In game 2 his biggest hit was an RBI single to left-field to put Team Green in a comfortable position. The feel to hit with some bat speed and juice is evident, it’s loose and quick through the zone, showed gap to gap power with more to come and can move around the diamond defensively, but catcher with offensive upside is where we see him being most valuable.

Alfonso Villalobos 3B / RHP / Chene bleu, QC / 2020

Report: Villalobos, an uncommitted 2020, moves well for a third baseman and he’s looked sharp on both sides of the ball this week. He’s a twitchy from the right-side and has bat to ball skills that play. The 6-foot-1, 188-pounder racked up three hits on the day and added a stolen base as well. Another player this week who will have no issues making the jump to college ball next year, we’ve seen him continue to hit throughout the summer.

Gavin Pringle RHP / NA, BC / 2020

Report: Uncommitted 2020 Gavin Pringle worked just one inning today, striking out two of the three hitters he faced. Another West Coast right-hander with a big frame, standing at 6-foot-2, 220-pounds, who works on a downhill plane. Fastball was heavy, sitting 87-88, touching 89 with swings and misses. Another intriguing, hard throwing uncommitted righty that has improved this year and a guy who shouldn’t stay uncommitted for long.
