2019 Tournament 12 Day Two Game Recaps: Volume 2

Orange vs. Black

Connor O'Halloran LHP / OF / St. Martin, ON / 2020

Report: O’Halloran continues to show why he is one of the top ranked arms in Ontario. During his outing, the Michigan commit mixed his speeds well keeping hitters off balance. He featured a heavy fastball with arm side run sitting around 84-86 mph. O’Halloran’s curveball was relied on quite regularly as a strikeout pitch. The breaking ball was around 75-77 and produced some ugly swings.  Curveball has a 1/7 break to it with good downward action. Change up has arm side sink sitting at 79 mph. The changeup became quite valuable towards the end of his outing. Overall, O’Halloran had a great day finishing with 7 strikeouts in three innings.

Theo Millas RHP / Alpha Secondary, BC / 2020

Report: Millas, a 2020 LSU commit dominated in relief in game 3. The RHP srtuck out the side in his first frame, blowing his 89-90, T91 fastball by hitters. He mixed in his curveball in his second frame, it shows flashes of potential but didn’t need it on this day.  The upside is huge for Millas, and he will be a must watch in his draft year.

CJ Maury SS / 2B / Mayfield, ON / 2020

Report: Maury, an infielder for the Toronto Mets had an impressive showing today. In the infield, he was solid, manning the second-base position with ease and making the plays in his direction. In his first two at bats he lined base-hits, the first, a single right up the shoot to knock in the first run of the game. Maury is a recent Wayne State commit who should be a solid player at the next level with tools and intangibles to helps teams win.

Brando Leroux SS / 2B / St augustine, ON / 2021

Report: Leroux, another infielder for the Toronto Mets stood out during today’s contest, his actions in the infield were smooth as always, he moves well and shows poise and instincts when playing on the dirt. At the plate, he drove a ball to deep centre field, displaying surprising pop due to looseness and bat speed. He is a name colleges should keep a close eye on with present tools and the ability to stick at shortstop.

Cedric Degrandpre 1B / RHP / Academie Baseball Canada, QC / 2020

Report: Des Grandpre is an uncommitted 2020 right-hander from Quebec with a loose, athletic delivery. It was up tempo and the actions are clean with the fastball working in the 87-88 range. Worked just one inning and struck out all three, pounding the zone with both the fastball and curveball. With the 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame to go along with the athleticism and secondary stuff, Des Grandpre is an exciting uncommitted prospect for coaches to keep an eye on.

Anson McGorman RHP / SS / Ballenas, AB / 2021

Report: The 2021 uncommitted McGorman had a strong day on the mound pitching two innings striking out 3. The 6 foot 1 right hander out of Vauxhall  had the fastball sit between  85-87 topping out at 88 from a ¾ arm slot. McGorman established his fastball early and displayed command of a couple of different effective offspeed pitches. His breaking ball was sitting 75-77 had some good hard sweeping downward break that he could throw for strikes. The changeup (74) displayed on day 2 is a good third pitch that kept hitters off balance. Should see an increase in velo with added strength.  Overall McGorman displayed a lot of good things during his outing.

Green vs. Red

Connor Caskenette C / 3B / Cowichan, BC / 2020

Report: Caskenette, a 2020 backstop from the west coast impressed on Wednesday in Toronto at the plate. Caskenette worked to the big part of the field, catching barrel on multiple occasions; including a two-run hit the other way. He has power potential with the ability to stick behind the plate at the next level. Made an athletic pick and throw to nail runner at second, was flat footed and still maintained enough arm strength and accuracy to be on the bag. He’s a really interesting player who can continue to up his stock with a big rest of the year.

Calvin Ziegler RHP / OF / St. Marys, ON / 2020

Report: Ziegler, a 2020 RHP came out of the gates firing in his Wednesday night appearance. The ball was jumping out of his hands, he was 90-93 mph, mixing in a curveball that flashed tight spin and hard break. He threw two really sharp curveballs that fell off late with 11/5 shape, buckelling hitters. He got into a jam late in innings, but showed glimpses of an exciting repertoire. Ziegler is another arm who will be closely monitored as the 2020 draft approaches with velocity to still make gains, and a curveball that can play up when is on and consistent.

Jack Seward RHP / Charles Best, BC / 2020

Report: Seward started the closing game and showed life and athleticism on the mound. The right-hander from B.C was 88-90 mph and worked more to his glove side. He also mixed in a 10/4 shaped breaking ball with sweeping action and generated swing and misses when down in the zone. Tat will be swing and miss potential at the next level. Seward is one of the top pitchers in the country and will be well-watched going forward.

Mathew Duffy 3B / RHP / Assumption, ON / 2020

Report: Duffy, a physical right-hander for the Great Lake Canadians came in to finish the final contest of the game for his club. He was 86-88 mph, pounding the strike zone, recording swings and misses in the zone. He mixed in two secondary offerings, a curveball which had 11/5 shape and depth, and a changeup with fading action that was well-located. Duffy has really come along on the mound, and is an uncommitted arm that would be a quality late get for a club.
