Central Coast Section, CA - Today's Central Coast Section (CCS) Focus covers my road trips from 4/5-6/19 and two games; St. Ignatius at Bellarmine and Live Oak at Pioneer. With so much talent in the Central Coast Section, I wanted to give all players a chance to be seen and today’s version of the CCS Focus has game notes, player notes and in-depth player notes with videos.

As always, you can click the highlighted name for bio information, previous notes, stats, video etc.

GAME NOTES:

4/5/19 St. Ignatius v Bellarmine: Both teams have been tough battles in the WCAL all season so I was expecting a good game especially with 1 run deciding the 1st meeting between the two teams. That wasn’t the case as Bellarmine’s offense took over in the 2nd getting 4 runs on 5 Hits being just the tip of the offensive iceberg for the Bells. In the 4th, Bellarmine got 8 runs on 6 hits, 2 BB and 2 HBPs chasing two different pitchers and having 14 batters come to the plate. After that big 4th both teams decided to let their reserves get AB’s and the game ended 12-1.

4/6/19 Live Oak v Pioneer: Live Oak and Pioneer had bad blood carry over from their Wednesday game to Saturday and the tensions were present the entire game. Live Oak got on the board first when 2020 RHP Connor Hennings hit a hard liner into RF having it get under the glove of the RF and allowing Hennings to come all the way around and make it 1-0 Acorns. 2020 RHP Ian Torpey from Pioneer settled in after that, giving up 1 Hit and 1 BB over the next 3 innings. Torpey gave up 2 more BBs and a run in the 6th being chased with 1 out but finished the day with 11K’s in those 5.1 innings. Pioneer had scoring opportunities during each of the first 4 Innings with runners in scoring position without getting them around to score. The Mustangs offense started to find consistent success in a wild 5th inning against Hennings where they picked up 5 Runs on 4 Hits and 2 BBs. In the 6th they added onto their 5-2 lead scoring 5 more on 2 BBs and 3 Hits ending the game 10-2 and taking the week against Live Oak.

PLAYERS OF NOTE:

2019 OF Matt Rosen (St. Ignatius) - Uncommitted. Medium frame with long limbs showing athletic build and current strength. Twitchy actions in CF with ability to go get the ball. Picked up two hits in the game with a single up the middle and through the 4-hole before a deep fly out. Quick out of the box with the ability to get moving quickly (4.57T) and can turn it up/down as needed.

2020 2B Nick Glafkides (St. Ignatius) - Uncommitted. Medium frame with high waist and wide sloped shoulders; projectable build with strength and athleticism. Full extension in swing with loose wrists. Drove a ball into RF for a flyout and then turned a pitch into LF in his 2nd AB. Athleticism showed up at 2B with strong range and just missing a leaping catch on a liner into RCF.

2020 3B/RHP Stephen Hartwell (St. Ignatius) - Uncommitted. Very lean, long frame with length in the legs. L/R profile at 3B with arm that’s playable there showing ability to flick the ball across the diamond. Compact swing with flat bat hitting hard grounders to both sides of the field. Came into the game late showing side-arm slot that runs getting two strikeouts. If he can add strength to the frame, possible for jumps.

2019 OF Derrick Turner (Bellarmine) - Uncommitted. Compact medium frame that is full through long torso. Quick trigger with compact stroke hitting ball hard all day. Took hanging CB off LF-fence for 2B in 1st, before lining out to CF in 2nd AB and hitting hard liner for 3rd AB. Fringey arm from RF that probably works better at LF/2B with small arm-side run.

2019 1B/OF Gio Saso (Bellarmine) - Uncommitted. Large full frame passes the eye test right away. On base three times with three clean singles through the middle and left side of the infield. Athletic with ability to go 1st-3rd easily. R/L profile can stick at 1st base with plenty of arm for the position and possibly corner OF.

2019 RHP Andrew DelBiaggio (Bellarmine) - Uncommitted. Started on the Mound for the Bells going 4 innings, giving up 7 singles and 1 run with 2 strikeouts. FB 78-81 MPH being able to locate the pitch all over the zone flashing cut and arm side run to both sides of the plate. Mixed in a Cutting slider (71-73 MPH) and Curveball (65-67 MPH) with slurvy break. Got big outs when guys were on base and attacked hitters.

2021 OF PJ Kissee (Live Oak) - Uncommitted. Large frame with squared shoulders and length in the limbs. Athletic in LF with fringy arm able to make plays over his shoulder and open his hips to track the ball. Flashes bat speed with swing having a bit of length, just missing a couple of pitches. Results weren’t great (2K, lineout), but have seen him a few times in Summer and actions in swing are things he can build upon.

2020 2B Hayden Matulich (Pioneer) - Uncommitted. Medium frame with athleticism in build showing strength in upper half. Good footwork at 2B with more than enough arm to stick there; could play 3B/RF also. Quick bat with compact stroke drove a 2B into RF line after Sac Fly and 1B. Athletic on the bases getting good jumps stealing two bags. Table setter with versatility.

2021 1B/RHP Jack Sauret (Pioneer) - Uncommitted. High waist and long legs with lean young frame; projectable build. Flashed growing strength in frame with loft in swing on long fly ball that carried over the head of the LF in 1st AB before hard single into RF. Came into pitch for final 1.2 innings with slingy mid-slot arm working FB 76-79 MPH and heavy actions on the arm-side run.

IN-DEPTH COVERAGE:

2020 RHP Ian Torpey (Pioneer) - Montana State-Billings Commit. Medium, long frame with length in legs and squared up shoulders; some current strength and athleticism in frame.
