Tulsa Preseason ID: Quick Hits

Scott Hood
Oklahoma Scouting Director

Prep Baseball Oklahoma hosted it's first ever Tulsa Preseason ID on MLK Day January 15th.  While the winter weather didn't play as nice, it didn't stop a few prospects from showcasing some impressive skills with multiple players standing out and catching our attention from the 2028 class, all the way to a 2024 prospect that programs at the next level are going to want to know.  The event featured laser timed 30 yard dashes, jumping data, BP with Trackman and Blast Motion, defensive evaluations with radar gun readings, bullpens with Trackman data captured, and Vizual Edge testing to complete the showcase.

Today we take a look at just of a few of the standouts with notes on each.  We will continue to provide coverage from this event in the coming days with more on the data captured at the event.

Blake Rogers OF / RHP / Bishop Kelley, OK / 2025

Rogers entered the event already establishing himself as one of the better prospects in the 2025 class and continued to show the type of tools that will make him a well-sought after prospect in the coming years.  Rogers showed a big arm from the outfield topping out at 91 mph and an event leading 95.4 mph exit velocity showing the power potential.  Rogers even shows some promise on the bump with an event best 85.5 mph fastball with strong riding life through the zone and an improved feel for the mid 70's slider with 2373 spin.

Frank Peralta OF / Bixby, OK / 2024

We got our first looks at Peralta at the Preseason ID and he did not disappoint.  The recent move in from the Domincan Republic showed one of the more well-put together rotational swings from the left side that generated exit velocities into the mid 90's with strong balance throughout the swing.  Defensively, Peralta has smooth movements and enough arm strength (86 mph) to play all three spots which makes him an intriguing follow throughout the Spring.

Hampton Miller OF / RHP / Booker T Washington, OK / 2025

Miller took one of the loudest rounds of the day during BP with exit velocities up to 93.6 mph and an event best 88.6 mph average.  Miller was able to accomplish the hard contact thanks to quick hands through the zone and advanced bat speed that plays up well with his lanky 6-foot-1 frame from the right side.  With his hand strength at the plate and strong athleticism, look for Hampton to make some noise in junior campaign and be one to follow in the coming months.

Tyler Sparks C / RHP / Sapulpa, OK / 2027

The freshman backstop from Sapulpa impressed both behind the dish and at the plate at teh Preseason ID.  Sparks showed some advanced hand strength reaching exit velos up to 90.7 mph and showing a strong feel for the barrel in the zone from both sides of the plate.  Defensively, Sparks worked an event best pop time as low as 2.03 and showed fluid movements in the infield offering up some positional versatility.  A switch-hitting catcher with strong catch and throw skills will always be in high demand and should make for him to be an interesting follow in the coming years.

Colby Whiteman OF / RHP / Owasso, OK / 2027

The 2-way prospect from Owasso continues to show improvement over where we saw him this past summer especially in the physicality growth in his build.  Whiteman had balls jumpin goff the barrel at 90 mph with a strong average of 86.4 mph showing a consistent path and strong rotational swing.  On the mound, the 6-foot and 160-pound right hander worked the fastball up to 80 mph with heavy arm side run and quick and short depth on an upper 60's breaking ball.

Tycen Armour RHP / OF / Bishop Kelley, OK / 2025

Armour continues to show the type of potential that will make him a coveted recruit in the coming years.  He had an event best laser timed 30 at 3.86 and showed big time arm strength from the outfield topping out at 92 mph.  On the mound, Armour has high spinning stuff starting with a riding fastball in the mid 80's and a much improved slider with heavy east/west action and spin in the 2700's.   With Armour showing a ton of arm strength in the outfield, don't be surprised to see the fastball velocity make bigger jumps in the coming months and becoming a must-see prospect especially on the mound.

Jasper Reid OF / RHP / Broken Arrow , OK / 2028

Although Reid hails from the 2028 class, he already has some serious hand strength and advanced feel for the barrel from both sides of the plate.  The switch hitter stands at 5-foot-8 and a lean 138 pounds with plenty of room to continue to add strength in the coming years.  Reid also shows strong arm strength for the class both in the infield and in the outfield and continues to show an advanced feel for playing the game.

Maxon Gipson OF / RHP / Cascia Hall, OK / 2027

The freshman outfielder/right-handed pitcher impressed on both sides of the ball at the Preseason ID.  At the plate, Gipson produced exit velocities up to 90.7 mph thanks to strong bat speed and quick hands through the zone.  Gipson is able to tap into his natural leverage (6-foot, 163-pounds) with an easy 2-tap stride and ability to hit off a firm front leg.  Gipson didn't flash the type of velocity off the mound that we saw from him this summer, but he did pump 87 mph from the outfield showing that there is a ton of raw arm strength in the tank that should surface on the mound fairly soon.

Beau Roe SS / RHP / Cushing, OK / 2025

Roe had an intriguing 1-2 combo with the fastball and changeup at the Preseason ID that caught our attention.  Roe is working the fatball in the low 80's currently, but is showing very strong spin metrics and a high riding fastball (20.1 avg inches of induced vertical break) that might mean hitters are perceiving it firmer than it currently is.  He's also able to effectively kill the spin on the upper 60's change up with late depth and strong sell.  With his arm strength registering at 83 mph across the diamond in the infield, don't be surpsrised to see Roe missing bats and seeing jumps in velocity soon.
