MS HS Team Preview: South Jones Braves

Matt Miller
State Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

High School: South Jones High School
Head Coach: Mason Strickland
Classification: MHSAA Class 5A
2023 Record (Finish): 19-10

TEAM OUTLOOK

South Jones returns 7 positional starters and 5 pitchers from a squad that finished 19-10 in 2023 after a 2nd round loss to Vancleave in the 5A state playoffs. Head Coach Mason Strickland feels the experience on the Braves roster has them primed and ready to compete for a state title in 2024.

Top returners for South Jones will be seniors Cole Richardson (RHP/INF - Southern Miss recruit), Chase Billiot (OF/RHP - Jones College recruit), and Aiden Spencer (INF/P - Southwest MS CC recruit) along with juniors Dylan Causey (RHP/UT - Southern Miss recruit), Bryson Bey (OF/P), Micah Coutta (LHP), and Cambridge McDaniels (1B/RHP).

The one-two punch of Richardson and Causey is a lot to deal with for opposing teams and with the help of Coutta, McDaniels, and Billiot the Braves could be looking at the makings of a very exciting season.

Coach Strickland also expects production from sophomores Logan Langley (P), and Collin Flowers (P), as well as freshmen Stanley Peters (OF) and Braxtyn Jensen (INF), who Strickland believes could possibly make an immediate impact.

South Jones begins regular season play on February 13th versus Germantown.

Cole Richardson (2024, Southern Miss)

Chase Billiot (2024, Jones College)
