Florida ProCase: Outfield Analysis

By Justin Burgess
Florida Scouting Director

This year’s Florida ProCase at IMG Academy included dozens of the top prospects in the 2017 class in Florida. Yesterday, the Pitcher Analysis was released and broke down the quality arms that were on display at this event. Today’s analysis will be of the outfielders and will examine some of the pro-level tools that were on display. Incredibly, many of the outfielders were two-way players and some of the top performers are uncommitted. Joshua Crouch had the top throwing velocity and Willy Escala, Dalton Wingo, and Duncan Hunter all displayed some advanced tools.

Here is an in-depth look at the outfielders, listed alphabetically:

Joshua Crouch, OF/3B, Sebring HS (2017)
Uncommitted junior who stands at 6-foot, 185 pounds with a strong, stalky, physical, and athletic body. He is currently ranked 91st in Florida and is one of the top uncommitted players in the class. Upright and open stance at the plate and his hands come down with his load but he does not get much separation. Strong hands and wrists with very good bat speed. He has a leg kick and uses his lower half well. Short, quick swing that is flat through the zone and the ball jumps off his bat. Strong arm from both the infield and outfield and he gets great backspin and carry on his throws. He had the top outfield velocity at 90 mph. In the infield he has soft hands and light feet but he has a longer arm action and slightly stands up to throw. He has the hands and arm strength to play 3B. He made hard contact at the plate in all three at-bats in the game and really drove the ball with authority.

Willy Escala, SS/OF, South Dade HS (2017)
Uncommitted junior who stands at 5-foot-11, 165 pounds with a lean and athletic body with visible strength and natural actions all over the field. He is currently ranked 54th in Florida and is one of the top uncommitted players in the state. He ran a 6.65 in the 60 and covers a lot of ground in center field. He has a loose, quick, and strong arm from the OF that produces online throws with good carry at 88 mph. From the infield he throws 86 mph with ease and he has soft hands and quick, light feet. He stands up slightly to throw but that can be fixed. At the plate he has an upright stance, gets a strong separation for his load as his hands slightly drop and he gets a good hand trigger. Smooth swing with a nice plane through the zone and the ball jumps off his bat for his size. He also doubled in the game off an 89 mph fastball.

Justin Farmer, OF, Riverview HS (2017)
Florida commit who stands at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds with a lean, athletic, and projectable body with strength. He is ranked 14th in Florida and 29th overall. At the plate he is relaxed, has some rhythm, and has an open stance. He gets a separation for his load and his hands come down slightly, getting into a strong hitting position. Short, quick, and easy stroke that is occasionally in and out of the zone but when it stays through, the ball really jumps off his bat. Very good lower half and weight transfer at the plate. From the outfield he has a solid average arm with a long, high 3/4 arm action and he gets some carry when stays on top of the ball. He ran a 7.00 in the 60 and threw 85 mph from the outfield. Farmer has a very high ceiling and will continue to improve with reps.

Duncan Hunter, OF, Jesuit HS (2017)
Uncommitted junior who stands at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds with a strong, athletic, physical, and projectable body. He is ranked 75th in Florida and 243rd overall. He is quiet and relaxed at the plate with an upright stance. Good base with balance throughout his swing. Easy swing with a nice plane through the zone and he hits hard line drives to all fields. From the outfield he has a loose, easy over the top arm action and gets great backspin and carry on his throws. He had the second highest OF velocity at 89 mph and he could throw even harder if he used more lower half. Hunter is a toolsy player who is one of the top uncommitted players in Florida.

Cameron Robinson, RHP/OF, University Orange City HS (2017)
North Florida commit who stands at 6-foot, 175 pounds with a lean, athletic, loose, and projectable body with long arms. He is currently ranked 69th in Florida. At the plate he is upright in his stance and relaxed and has some rhythm. His hands are low and come down some more with his separation and stride. He gets a small leg kick for his stride as well. His swing is a little long but that is expected with his long arms. Nice swing plane through the zone and the ball jumps off his bat when he gets extended. From the outfield he has a long, loose high 3/4 arm action and gets good carry on his throws when he stays on top of the ball. He threw 88 mph from the OF and ran a 7.14 in the 60. From the mound he only got to throw a few pitches because he was hit in the foot with a line drive, but he was sitting 88 mph and he has been up to 90 mph in the past.

Dalton Wingo, OF, Plant City HS (2017)
Uncommitted junior who stands at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds with a long, lean, athletic, and rangy body with wiry strength. He has the kind of frame that will put on weight and muscle and still remain athletic and explosive He is ranked 66th in Florida and 223rd overall. He ran a 6.90 in the 60-yard dash but his jumps and long strides make him appear to be faster than that. He has a shorter, quick arm action from the outfield which stems from his recent transition from the infield. The arm speed and strength are there as he threw 86 mph from the outfield, he just needs to lengthen out his arm action and get more momentum into his throws. At the plate has great rhythm and quick, explosive hands that really make the ball jump off his bat. He drove a hard single up the middle off an 89 mph, showing off his bat speed and ability to square up quality pitching. Wingo might very well be the top uncommitted outfielder in Florida.
