PBR Success Stories: 2020 C Brendan Roney

Colin Gray
PBR Florida

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to provide athletes with a platform to showcase their talents and be able to play baseball at the next level. One of the biggest events for uncommitted players is the PBR Future Games. The Future Games is an event for uncommitted sophomores and juniors that allows them to represent their home state and showcase themselves in front of over 300 college coaches. Over the last three years, 45 players from the Future Games have gone on to commit to play college baseball.

We wanted to look back at the 2018 Future Games which featured 18 players committing to play college baseball. The players from the 2018 team will be heading into their freshman year of college next year and we wanted to ask them about their time with Prep Baseball Report. Today, we talked to 2020 C Brendan Roney about the 2018 Future Games and his overall experience at PBR events throughout his high school years.

Brendan Roney, C, Key West, 2020, Boston College

Brendan Roney, a class of 2020 catcher from Key West High School was a participant in the 2018 Prep Baseball Report Future Games. Brendan is positionally ranked top 15 in Florida and has signed with Boston College.

Question:

How did attending the Future Games and other Prep Baseball Report events help you gain exposure from colleges and how it helped you become recruited by Boston College?

Answer:

All the events I attended for PBR were the best events I’ve attended. From Preseason All-State to the qualifiers for the future games, all had scouts and the best players around. The Future Games allowed me to showcase my abilities in front of almost every college coach in the country which included Boston College. Shortly after the event I contacted Boston College and they invited me up for a camp and I played very well. Playing in the ACC was a dream of mine and the Futures Game allowed me to show I had the ability to do so.

Question:

What was the experience like working with Prep Baseball Report to become recruited?

Answer:

Working with PBR was a blast! Going to the events and working with Coach Doug Freeman really helped me grow as a player. PBR has connections with a lot of colleges, and the staff of PBR did all the could to put me in front of them to let me showcase my talents.

Question:

What Prep Baseball Report showcase stood out to you the most?

Answer:

The Future Games was by far the event that stood out the most to me. Stepping on the field in front of hundreds of college coaches was an experience I will never forget. The Future Games was easily the best event I’ve attended in high school.

Scouting Report

2/11/19 - Boston College recruit. Standing at 5-foot-10, 175 pounds he has a lean, athletic frame. Defensively, he is an athletic catcher with upside. Pop times ranged from 2.12-2.2 and should improve as the transfer continues to improve. Hands work and is a sound receiver. In the infield, he shows solid defensive actions and could see playing multiple positions. Offensively, he has a leg kick trigger and gets balanced on time. Could clear the back side better and with that can get rotational at times. The hands work and are quick, creating present bat speed. The strength also translates, but could even get more out of the lower half. Still generated an exit velocity of 90 mph with much more potential.

08/04/18- The 5-foot-10, 175 pound C/INF was one of the  bigger position player winners from the week. Roney is physical, with lean strength throughout the frame. Primarily a catcher, he has all of the tools to be an above average defender. The hands work well, has  athletic footwork, a clean transfer and pop times that ranged from 1.97-2.11. He also showed athleticism and some quick twitch in the infield. He has enough athleticism to play anywhere on the field. Offensively, he has present above average bat speed while staying compact through the zone. Exit velocity of 89 mph, he has a strong lower half, quick twitch and is aggressive through the zone. Overall, the athleticism and tools project well. Offensively, he has a chance to be a top of the order hitter and will be a high follow and shouldn’t be uncommitted long.

07/14/18- Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds with a strong, solid frame. Showed above average all around defensive tools. In the infield, he has solid defensive actions and range. Behind the plate he is athletic with quick twitch actions. The hands work very well, haas present hip flexibility and an overall feel for the position. Offensively, he has a simple set up and swing. There can be a little length, but when he is compact he uses strength in the wrist and lower half to generate above average bat speed. Showed present barrel awareness and despite not getting a hit, he was on the barrel in both of his at-bats.
