Alabama HS Team Preview: Lauderdale County Tigers

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Lauderdale County Tigers enjoyed yet another deep run throughout the playoffs in 2023, which is something they've grown accustomed to over the past couple seasons. The Tigers have now reached the Elite 8 in Class 3A in back-to-back seasons, and this spring, they'll look to put all the pieces together once again and attempt to advance even further in 2024.

The Tigers should once again be a real threat in Class 3A with tons of returning experience from those Elite 8 runs back on this year's team. Coach Looney & co. are hoping that those players who have had tastes of deep playoff runs will benefit this year's team for them to be able to potentially back in to the state finals. There's plenty of baseball to be played, but Lauderdale County once again looks to have a strong group in 2024. It all starts at the top with RHP/SS Miles Edwards (Wallace-Hanceville CC, 2024), a do-it-all type player that should help lead the way both at the plate and on the mound this spring. Edwards, the 2023 Class 3A Player of the Year, is described as the leader of this team and has been a staple inside this program for the past four seasons. He will play a big part on this team's success again both with his efforts on the field and leading the Tigers in the locker room. RHP/OF Justin Slaton (2024) is another key players who will add depth to their pitching staff this spring and is a solid right-handed hitter in the top-half of their order. RHP/OF Tuck Green (2024) and OF Micah Christensen (2024) are two more senior outfielders returning for the Tigers. Green is a hard-nosed player that can cover tons of ground in the outfield, while Christensen returns to the middle of the order and after a solid season in 2023. LHP/1B Skylar Tucker (2025) is another upperclassmen who is expected to have another big year for Lauderdale County. The junior is a crafty southpaw on the mound that can throw all three pitches for strikes, and has had a great off-season in the weight room getting stronger. Rounding out the notable returners, C Hudson Lash (2025) is a high baseball IQ player that will once again handle the Tigers' pitching staff behind the plate. He brings back valuable experience at the varsity level, and has earned the trust of the coaching staff to call pitches.

Lauderdale County looks primed once again for another successful spring season with seven positional starters returning to the order and six pitchers coming back who all saw time on the mound in 2023. The coaching staff believes one of this team's strengths is their experience, which is always a major factor when building a team at the start of the season. The Tigers will compete in Area 16 against Elkmont and Clements again this season, and will look to be one of the two teams left standing heading into the state finals in 2024.
