Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Jacksonville/Oxford/Montgomery area at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason top-10 rankings in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state.

Each week we will be releasing our Players of the Week, updating the top-10 ranks in each AHSAA classification, as well updating our Power 25 overall rankings. One thing, especially, you don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state, as well as the recaps and previews of the big games we’re covering.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Madison Academy Mustangs enjoyed another strong season inside Class 5A in 2023 and continued to reel off deep playoff runs with another Sweet 16 appearance. The Mustangs racked up over 20 wins during the regular season, including noteworthy wins over Vestavia Hills, Sardis, Gulf Shores, Huntsville, Piedmont, and others. This spring, they're gearing up for what looks to be another strong season with some notable returners coming back both at the plate and on the mound.

Madison Academy has continued to be a traditional powerhouse in Class 5A over the past couple of decades, which includes four state championships in 2009, 2014, 2015, and 2016. The Mustangs will look to win their fifth state championship in school history this spring, and it looks like they have the talent to do so. Starting at the top, INF Maddox Meadows (2024) and SS Tee Foster (2025) are a pair of upperclassmen infielders who are both expected to help lead the way in the heart of their order. Meadows was very productive last spring in his junior campaign, hitting .327 with 5 2B's, 3 3B's, 4 HR's, and 32 RBI's a season ago, while Foster also put up very impressive numbers hitting .424 with 15 2B's, 2 3B's, 3 HR's, and 40 RBI's during his sophomore season. Meadows is currently uncommitted, and Foster is former PBR Future Game alumni from this past summer and is regarded as one of the top uncommitted shortstops in the junior class in AL. OF Davis Parker (2025) will also provide an immediate boost to the lineup after being sidelined due to an injury for the majority of the season. The left-handed hitting outfielder was hitting over .300 with 8 2B's before his injury in the eary part of the spring. C Keaton Watson (2025) is another returning junior that brings back valuable varsity experience, as he hit .350 with 7 XBH's and 26 RBI's. Watson was also strong behind the plate, where he threw out 43% of would-be base stealers. OF Myles Johnson (2025; Eastern Kentucky) seemed to really take a huge step forward in his development during this past summer, and capped it off with his committment to Eastern Kentucy. The left-handed hitting outfielder is also coming off a strong performance at the North AL Preseason All-State a couple of weeks ago. Look for him to play a big part in their offensive success this season. Rounding it out, RHP Jack Doyle (2025) is another prospect who started off their 2024 campaign on the right note with a quality outing at the North AL Preseason All-State. Doyle really showed flashes last year using an upper-80's fastball, and will be expected to take on a heavier workload sliding up in their pitching rotation this spring.

The Mustangs will rely on other players inside their program as well, but the strong core of returning players has Coach Pressley & co. excited about another potential playoff run at the end of the season. They'll compete in Area 16 this spring against Ardmore, East Lawrence, and Brewer for a playoff berth at the end of the regular season. Expect the Mustangs to once again be a strong competitor in a wide-open Class 5A in 2024.
