MS HS Team Preview: Ocean Springs Greyhounds

Matt Miller
State Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

*Please note the information has been gathered from head coaches across the state, based on their replies to the questionnaire we distributed over this offseason.

TEAM OUTLOOK

Ocean Springs returns 7 positional starters and 5 pitchers from last year's squad that finished 18-14 after a 2nd round loss to Brandon in the 6A state playoffs. Coach Ryne Long hopes his Greyhounds strengths, pitching and overall team speed, can carry them even further in 2024.

Top returners include seniors Chris Fox (C/OF), Grant Russell (Catcher), Griffin Frye (LHP), Maddox Moreland (2B/RHP), juniors Cannon Hensarling (RHP/SS), Jack Jordan (SS/RHP), and AJ Arguello (CF).

Jordan led all returning players with a .326 average and 21 runs batted in last season and will be expected to repeat his production in 2024. Mooreland finished 2nd with 18 RBI’s to go along with his 4 home runs. The Greyhounds lost a few big time arms to graduation but have plenty more looking to step up. Lefty Griffin Frye contributed 35 innings and racked up 48 strikeouts last season and should be a go to arm again. He will get help from Jordan, senior lefty Will Blevins, and 2023 Future Games participant Hensarling, who is primed to break out this spring.

Coach Long also has plenty of others he’s looking to get production out of which include seniors Simon Kruppa (SS/OF), Michael Diaz (1B/C), Wyatt Allen (LHP), along with Brannon Spencer (1B/3B) and LeBarron Brumfield (CF/OF).

The future looks solid for the Greyhound as a host of underclassmen are on the way including sophomores Ryan Lemaire (LHP), Triston Fox (SS/2B), Evan Porter (RHP), Victor Rojas (2B/SS), AJ Rossi (P/OF), Lucas Sinopili (2B/SS), freshmen Ethan Johnson (P/1B), Taylor Spencer (CF), and Bryson Daams (Catcher).

Ocean Springs begins regular season play on February 15th versus Mary G. Montgomery.
