MS HS Team Preview: West Jones Mustangs

Matt Miller
State Director

The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Mississippi.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park as they compete for a state championship, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Mississippi. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing other pieces of content covering the Magnolia State.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each MHSAA classification as well as a Power 25.

High School: West Jones High School
Head Coach: Trey Sutton
Classification: MHSAA Class 6A
2023 Record (Finish): 25-10

TEAM OUTLOOK

West Jones returns 6 positional starters and 4 pitchers from a roster that finished 25-10 after a loss to East Central (eventual State Champions) in the 5A South State Championship series. Coach Trey Sutton is counting on the depth of quality arms and overall experience to bey key factors as to why his Mustangs will be state contenders once again in 2024 as they make the jump to 6A.

Top returners for West Jones include seniors Camden Clark (C/RHP - Pearl River CC recruit) , Jaxon Rayborn (1B/RHP - Copiah Lincoln CC recruit), Carter Leggett (RHP - Copiah Lincoln CC recruit), Kale Matthews (RHP), Dakota Smith (SS - Jones College recruit), and junior Dash Piper (3B/RHP - Jones College recruit).

Camden Clark led the Mustang offense a year ago with a .345 batting average, while Jaxon Rayborn and Dash Piper shared the team lead in runs batted in with 24 each. Clark was also the workhorse on the mound finishing 9-3 with a 1.05 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 73 innings. He will get plenty of help on the bump from Rayborn, Matthews, and Leggett.

Coach Sutton has several other players he will look to get production from which include juniors Braxton White (LHP), and Carson Green (OF) along with sophomore Colin Poore (OF) and freshman (Clay Tolbert).

West Jones begins regular season play on February 12th versus Stringer.
