MEDFIELD, Ma. - While the high-school season remains in doubt, it has not slowed down the drive to get better for Sam Kornet.

“We have a ton of juniors and a lot of seniors all working hard for our goal,” the Medfield 2021 said. “That motivated me … that, and college baseball.”

The desire to play at the next level has always been there for Kornet, but the realization it could happen is a more recent development.

“It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, but I didn’t start looking at it seriously until maybe sophomore summer/start of my junior year,” the 59th-ranked uncommitted junior in New England related. “I made varsity my sophomore year and I’m like, maybe I have a shot at this. As I worked harder and harder, I saw that maybe I could do this. I found out I have the potential.”

An improved work ethic has helped the cause for Kornet, the 103rd-rated player in New England’s 2021 class.

“I’ve been working out a lot training for five months and I shed a lot of fat and put on muscle,” noted the 6-5, 215-pounder, who lost 10 pounds in the process. “At the beginning of the whole training I wasn’t really motivated, but my friends kept me in check. After the first day I could barely move. But every day I kept pushing myself and at the end of it all the trainer said you worked the hardest of anybody.”

Kornet has attended camps at Trinity, UConn, Northeastern and Bates along with the PBR Massachusetts Hurricanes Scout Day the last day of February. The lone visit was earlier that month to RPI.

“They like my build, that I’m a tall big kid which they like for first base,” pointed out Kornet, who has also spent time pitching.
