Erie's Mattson eager for chance to play in majors in 2020

Ranked No. 89 in the Pennsylvania Class of 2014, Isaac Mattson was a very athletic righty that signed late with the University of Pittsburgh following a big senior year of high school baseball. At 6-foot-3, 180-pounds and a fastball that was sitting comfortably in the upper 80s, the projection for college success was evident.

Mattson went on to compile a 3.64 ERA in 94 innings that spanned three years in a Pitt uniform. Most impressive was his 104 strikeouts to just 19 walks. After adding 25 pounds to his frame and significant velocity to his fastball, Mattson had an all-star summer in the Cape Cod League in 2016.

A 19th round selection by the Los Angeles Angels in 2017, Maatson was recently added to the Baltimore Orioles 40 man roster. Over three seasons of minor league baseball Mattson has gone 14-7 with a 2.89 ERA, including going 6-3 with a 2.33 ERA in AAA during the 2019 season.

Mattson spent the 2020 summer at the Orioles alternate training sight during a pandemic shortened season.

Scouting Report

5/23/14

Mattson displayed some of the form that has created some late season buzz around his continued availability. While he struggled with command (5 walks in 3 innings) his fastball showed late life sitting 84-86 and touching 87-88 on occasion. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound righty also struggled with command of his 11/5 breaking curveball at 67-69 mph.

6/18/13

Mattson is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect that ran a 7.84 60-yard dash and threw 80 mph from the outfield. Mattson showcased a flat bat path through the zone and a weight shift approach to hitting during his round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Mattson showed promise during his bullpen session sitting 81-84 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run to his fastball. The long limbed righty also displayed a 67 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 75 mph changeup.

6/12/13

Mattson is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound RHP that participated as a pitcher only. The athletically built righty worked out of a high 3/4 arm slot and sat 80-81 with some arm side run. Mattson also showcased command of a 67 mph 11/5 breaking curveball and a 75 mph changeup. He has a loose arm and has the potential to add significant velocity with a few minor adjustments to his delivery.
